About the Item

C. Andronis French River Landscape, signed and dated 1959 Oil on board Original carved French frame This luminous and expressive painting by C. Andronis captures the vibrant spirit of post-war French Impressionism, evoking the gentle rhythms of life along a provincial river town in late summer. The composition unfolds along a tranquil waterway, flanked by tree-lined embankments and flecked with colourful reflections of sky and foliage. Boats, moored along the edge, lend the scene a lived-in intimacy, while the vanishing perspective draws the eye gently toward a distant bridge and the hazy outlines of a village bathed in atmospheric light. Executed in bold, confident brushwork and a palette rich in verdant greens, ochres, and the delicate pinks and blues of riverine light, the work reveals an artist fluent in the language of Impressionism yet infused with a distinctly mid-century sensibility. The angled brushstrokes and high-key colouration suggest influences of the Fauves and late Monet, but there is also a graphic immediacy that hints at the evolving taste of the 1950s, when painters sought to reconnect with the landscape while moving beyond mere representation. Dated 1959, this painting emerges from a period of renewal in France, when the nation’s artistic identity was reasserting itself after decades of turmoil. Artists like Andronis found fresh inspiration in the enduring beauty of the French countryside and the light-play of its rivers, echoing earlier traditions while imbuing them with contemporary confidence and energy. The work is beautifully set in a hand-carved vintage French frame, whose ornate scrollwork contrasts handsomely with the modernist spontaneity of the painting. A lively and evocative piece, it would sit effortlessly in interiors that blend classical character with a taste for bold, painterly expression.

20th Century Oil painting of an Impressionist River Landscape of Cahors, France
By Ken Moroney
Located in Woodbury, CT
20th Century Oil painting of an Impressionist River Landscape of Cahors, France Moroney was born on the 14th of February 1949 in South London. Of Anglo Irish parentage, his father was typical of his generation and worried about Ken’s artistic temperament which he viewed as effeminate. As a result, Ken took up boxing and won a gold medal for South London in his teens. His art continued to flourish with his trademark striking use of color. His main medium oils and he favors romantic subjects of Edwardian times. Ken has traveled extensively and spent 2 years working for major galleries in New York. The Royal Academy nominated him in 1976 as being one of the few promising young artists to emerge this century: "Ken Moroney has considerable talent, any painting purchased now can only be seen as a sound long term investment." Ken Moroney's work now hangs in many important collections and has had paintings exhibited at The Royal Academy (London), and the Kline Galleries (Canada). The painting came from a private collection and previously came from Duncan Miller...
