Carol Sideman (1925-2021) was a noted San Francisco Bay Area artist. The following biography was taken from her website on 8-1-2019 A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Carol Sideman is widely known for her outstanding watercolors and oils in the "plein air" style. Her spontaneous sketches, painted on location, aim to capture the "essence of the place" and are later developed in the studio into finished oil paintings. Sideman's oil paintings have consistently captivated art collectors. Her paintings have been exhibited widely and received many prestigious awards, including first place in oil painting from the Marin Society of Artists. Her paintings are an integral part of both private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Sideman's work has appeared in "Prize Winning Art, Book 6", Allied Publishers. Her oil painting "The Young Artist" was published by New York Graphics and has been featured in a nationwide school program for art education, presented by Addison-Wesley and later by Crystal Productions. Sideman says about her work, "My aim is to capture the spirit of a place with on-the-spot impressions. In these sketches, I interpret the basic characteristics -- the ragged foothills, the rocky forms, and the meandering waterways." "Later, in the comfort of my studio, I relive the moment and take the time to reflect. I explore the basic elements of design, movement, values, and color." "In my paintings, I like to leave a great deal unsaid, allowing the viewer to fill in with his own imagination. My greatest fun in painting is to capture the essence of the subject, using abstract forms, movements, patterns, and color relationships." "It is exciting to me to continually experiment -- finding new ways of applying textural patterns, discovering what happens to the paint with spontaneous 'accidents'. An idea in one painting leads to new discoveries for the next -- the endless possibilities making each new painting an exciting adventure." Sideman received a B.A. and teaching credential from the University of California at Berkeley, and her art career began as an assistant in the Architectural Rendering Department there. Later, she taught art in the Oakland Public Schools. Then, further study in mechanical drawing enabled her to start her second career, drafting and architectural illustrating. In subsequent years, she turned to fine art. She has enjoyed her fine art career for more than 50 years.

Untitled 564
By Joe Doyle
Located in San Francisco, CA
This painting with added elements is an excellent example of Joe Doyle’s abstract illusionist art. It is composed of acrylic on shaped canvas with fabric elements added. It measures 36 x 43 inches. Each edge has been painted except for the left edge which has a frame. The right edge has been shaped. The black elements of the tent-like structure are added fabric. The work is signed, titled "564" and dated on the reverse. As well it bears a label from Harcourts Gallery, a gallery in San Francisco during the 1980s and 1990s. The work is in very good condition. Joe Doyle established himself as a painter during the movement toward new abstraction in San Francisco in the mid-seventies. Stylistically his work evolved from photo-realist renderings of aircraft which exaggerated differences in focus of background and foreground" By 1975 his imagery shifted to arrangements of flat, geometric forms and tubular squiggles in a trompe l'oeil manner that created the illusion of a multi-layered, three dimensional space. By the late 1970s Doyle, along with James Havard, Jack Reilly, George D. Green, and others, had attained national prominence working this style now referred to as Abstract Illusionism. Doyle and others were included in 'Reality of Illusion' a large touring exhibition of primarily American illusionist artists organized by the University of Southern California and The Denver Art Museum. Doyle enrolled at San Francisco State College receiving his M.A. in 1971. From 1971 to 1975 he was a photo-realist transferring images from photographs using airbrush techniques on canvas, occasionally adding political satire into the subject matter, as in "Ice House...
