About the Item
"Africa Trees" is an oil painting inspired by travel in the Hwang National Park in Zimbabwe, in southern Africa. Close to the edge of the Kalahari Desert, it is the largest national reserve of the country and known as a region with little water and sparse vegetation.
The abstract design is what drew artist Carole Garland to paint these twisting trees against a hot parched environment. The horizontal branches, still hanging on to their large crimson-orange leaves at the end of
the September dry season, create a counterpoint to the vertical trees behind. A palette of muted ochres, raw umber, hints of green and mauve, interplay to create a harmonious work that reflects the season, the temperature and the stark beauty that is southern Africa.
The "African Trees" painting on canvas is gallery wrapped with painted sides. It is wired for ease of hanging.
Carole Garland is in art collections throughout the United States. She has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California including several juried California Art Club shows, individual shows at

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.
