About the Item
Expressionist French Landscape, Bright Colours, Oil Painting
circle of Pierre Ambrogiani (French 1907-1985)
Oil painting on canvas, unframed
Canvas size: 6.5 x 9.5 inches
Beautiful expressionist painting of a sunset over the rural fields in Southern France. The pinky/red colours and dark yellow skyline suggests a low sun light, over rich colourful greens and blues to interpret the landscape.
The work is unsigned but very close to Pierre Amgbrogiani.
Pierre Ambrogiani was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, although he was brought up in Marseille, where he continued to live and work for the rest of his life. He was an Expressionist painter of Provençal landscapes, still lifes, and nudes. Entirely self taught, he sustained a long career of over fifty years, with international recognition.
He participated in his first major exhibition with a group of fellow Provençal artists in 1936 in Marseille: numerous exhibitions followed, including one in Paris in 1946 and another in New York in 1947. He also illustrated many books, especially those written by his friend Marcel Pagnol, whose works evoked the hard, but lyrical, way of life in Provence in the early twentieth century.
In 1973 Pierre Ambrogiani had a major retrospective exhibition at the Musée de la Vielle Charité in Marseille, and died after a long illness in 1985. The sun and colours of Provence were a constant theme throughout his work, coupled with his enduring delight in the bustle and energy of the picturesque old Port of Marseille.
Paintings by Pierre Ambrogiani can be found at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, and permanent collections in museums in Menton, Marseille and Montpellier. He exhibited in Paris, Marseille, New York, London, Turin, Zurich and Stockholm. In 1951 he was awarded 1st Prix Internationale à la Biennale de Menton.
Pierre Ambrogiani died in 1985
The thick brush stroke is a lovely feature, as it creates some depth to the painting.
This would look great within an eclectic collection of paintings all together!

"Copse", oil painting, landscape, abstract, trees, field, sky, light, copper
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Copse" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – the landscape with trees on the horizon, the wide full sky bearing down with clouds and light. The picture surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but note the speed and swift conviction of those brushstrokes. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact.

"Trunks" Orange Contemporary Expressionist Landscape Abstract by Leviathan
By David Leviathan
Located in Carmel, CA
David Leviathan's "Trunks" is a 39" x 45" contemporary landscape abstract that captures the essence of a forest's heart. The canvas is alive with a rich tapestry of autumnal hues, ranging from deep umbers to fiery oranges and subtle golds. Leviathan's technique gives rise to a textured surface that mimics the rugged bark of tree trunks, standing tall amidst a flurry of color. The style is both abstract and suggestive, inviting the viewer to feel the organic growth and the cyclical decay inherent in nature. The painting evokes a sense of resilience and majesty, paying homage to the timeless beauty of the natural world.
About the Artist:
David Leviathan, born on August 6, 1950, in Kibbutz Givat Brenner, Israel, is a multifaceted Israeli artist whose talents span painting, sculpture, and poetry. After serving in the military, he studied at the Avni Institute of Fine Arts and worked under the guidance of Yehezkel Streichman...
