About the Item

David Bareford’s distinctive style incorporates traditional themes with spontaneity. About his work he comments, “The term inspiration is overworked and doesn’t apply to what I try to accomplish. I work at painting, I don’t wait for inspiration.” His answer for his success in painting: “long hours, a lot of second tries, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, meeting my own criterion.” It is David Bareford’s profound ability to capture natural beauty in a work of art which has gained him overwhelming success as an artist and painter. The essence of his creative spirit remains in his thirst for the splendors of harmony in both form and color. “I paint things I feel are beautiful. Sometimes I’ll watch the fishing boats coming in for the day in the afternoon sun. The sun will be gleaming on those old boats, making the green and reds and oranges of their hulls vibrant--simply beautiful in the light. I know what kind of life these men live - how they struggle to make ends meet, how their boats are old and beat up. But at that moment those boats are beautiful, and I don’t believe that I have to talk about the unattractive parts of life in my paintings. I’ve chosen to look at the beautiful aspects.” Certainly it is the vitality of his paintings which captivates and enriches his broad audience.

Colors in the Wind
By Nicholas Berger

Nicholas Berger Biography American, b. 1949 In his more than three decades as an artist, Nicholas Berger (b. 1949) has created an outstanding body of work that continues to evolve and excite viewers. Best known for his industrial, waterfront scenes of New York between 1930-1970, Berger effortlessly captures a period when the technology and landscape of the city was rapidly changing. Although he paints scenes of a bygone era, Berger draws inspiration from the waterfronts near his home in New York’s Hudson River Highlands as well as historical sources in museums. Berger holds BFA and MFA degrees from Alfred University. Earlier in his career, the artist painted representational landscapes rendered in watercolor, a medium in which he achieved great success, sharing a sellout two-person show in Tokyo with Andrew Wyeth. In the mid-2000s, Berger transitioned to his signature industrial scenes of the city, employing oil on panel in a painterly manner influenced by the Hudson River and Brandywine schools...

Regatta in Sydney Harbour
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Period yacht racing is a rare and desirable subject for marine paintings, and a 19th century work from Australia of this prime subject is among the rarest finds we may offer. The artist, Charles F. Gerrard, shows up in 1882 on the Sydney professional trade list as a painter, then as a marine artist and finally as simply 'artist'. He exhibits his first works with the Royal Art Society in Sydney in 1884, consisting of coastal scenes. He is extremely well received by his contemporaries according to newspaper reports. The recognizable features of "The Rocks", along the western shore of Sydney cove near the harbor bridge, stands forth as a superb background for the racing yachts. This historic location is the foundation of the British Australian empire, and today is the oldest preserved colonial district in the country, described as "Sydney's outdoor museum". Fine-lined cutter yachts compete over a sailing course, with two shown in great close detail while five more hold their positions in the regatta, as the rhythmic small swells are evidence the wind favors the leaders running on close reaches with the crossing tide. The crew and yachts are very much in the British formal yachting manner, with full uniforms and the plum-bow hulls. Note that there is one crew attired in red, possibly a naval marine team, and the sail steam ship anchored in the center flies the Australian Colonial...
