About the Item

This splendid mid-18th-century oil painting depicts a marine scene with numerous British and Dutch vessels, including two impressive ‘Men-O’-War’. It’s comparable to the oeuvre of Anglo-French painter, Dominic Serres RA (c.1722-1793). The rich British tradition of marine painting is representative of Britain’s naval power during the 18th century. Such was the dominance of Britain’s navy that paintings such as this were in high demand by patrons, particularly by the landed gentry. These drama-filled ensembles were influenced by the earlier Dutch painters such as Ludolf Backhuysen I (1630-1708). At a time when Britain ruled the waves, numerous artists began working in this style. These included, among others, Dominic Serres RA, who spent many years as a merchant sailor before taking up painting when captured by the British in the Caribbean. Upon his release from Marshalsea prison, he lived in Northamptonshire, where he studied the works of Willem van de Velde and produced numerous copies. It’s believed that he later moved to London and trained under Charles Brooking (c.1723-1759). He became the Marine Painter to King George III in 1780. Held in a later frame.
