About the Item

This iconic Impressionist beach scene was celebrated by this artist who had many successful exhibitions during his life of his beach scenes. Done on masonite which is a panel and his preferred material, it is framed in a gold leaf hand carved frame of value. It has a linen liner and inside the frame the painting itself measures 17 x 26 inches. Will cut a window through which to travel into in a room! Signed and dated lower left: Purdy and dated with 3 dates on which the artist worked on the painting from beginning to end. Self-taught, Purdy was influenced by many artists, including the Barbizon School, French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, and American 19th Century Painters. No particular artistic influence was evident during his childhood. After high school, he enlisted in the army air force and entered Germany as a foot soldier with the 9th army. After the war, Purdy pursued a degree in Psychology, graduating in 1949 from the University of Connecticut and from Boston University with his Master’s in Psychology in 1950. While in Boston, Purdy worked in an art gallery, performing tasks such as framing pictures. It was here that he first became art-conscious and was surprised to learn that individuals actually chose art as a profession. Purdy lived and painted most of his life in New England. He exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, including: The Britain Museum, Connecticut; The Butler Institute, Columbus, Ohio; Colby College, Maine; The University of Kansas; The Chrysler Collection; and Bernheim-Jeune Galleries, Paris. In addition, he has been honored with numerous awards including a Gold Medal from the Allied Artists. He was a teacher of painting at the Silvermine Academy of Art in Connecticut and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine from the Hill
Located in Greenwich, CT
Best known for his painterly landscape views, Oberteuffer developed a fresh and vigorous style, using a subdued color palette with agile brushstrokes that was influenced by French Impressionism. Boothbay Harbor from the Hill is a wonderful example of this style of painting and shows Oberteuffer’s mastery of subtle color. It is an added plus that Oberteuffer has specifically referenced a clearly identifiable locale- Boothbay Harbor- in his title and additionally denoted that the view was painted from the hillside, potentially capturing actual homes and buildings of the time. Framed in a Gold Leaf Whistler style frame of exceptional quality. The painting has vivid and fresh color and creates a window in any room. The canvas inside the frame measures 30 x 24 inches. Signed: Oberteuffer lower right Provenance: Estate of George Oberteuffer...

Lake Street
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Lake Street, c. 1920 -30s, oil on board, 12 x 9 inches, signed lower right and verso, titled verso About the Painting At the center of Oscar Daniel Soellner’s Lake Street, we see the stairway leading to an elevated railway station on what is now Chicago’s Green Line route. When its first section opened in 1893 as the second permanent elevated rapid transit line in Chicago, this route was known as the Lake Street Elevated Railroad. Chicago’s “L,” like the New York subway and rapid transit system, played an instrumental role in the development of the urban economy and the overall look and feel of the city. The formal aspects of urban railroads and the role they played in efficiently moving large number of everyday citizens across America’s growing metropolises were catnip for many American Scene painters during the first half of the 20th Century. Here, Soellner uses the techniques of the impressionists and the palette of the Ash Can School, to convincingly depict a classic Chicago scene...

Vermillion at Lee's Ferry ( Plein Air Landscape painting sky blue terracotta)
By Jane Chapin
Located in Cody, WY
This is a 'Plein Air" landscape Painting by Jane Chapin as seen in the viewing room exhibition on Silas VON MORISSE GALLERY. “Plein-Air” is the French expression to describe the act of painting in situ within the landscape, capturing the ever changing weather and light with tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork and softness of form... The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive. "My paintings grow from observing and interpretating light as it emerges from, surrounds and reflects on everyday people and scenes. They seek to remind us of the beauty of our common surroundings, regardless of where we are." - Jane Chapin Jane Chapin Painting the Land of the Free...
