About the Item

DUANE ARMSTRONG – "WIND MILL" ⚜ Oil on canvas ⚜ Hand signed lower right ⚜ Custom conservation gilt wood frame CLASSIC LANDSCAPE FROM ARMSTRONG’S GRASS SERIES In "Wind Mill," Duane Armstrong captures a sunlit hillside where life unfolds in quiet motion. Two boys make their way upward through tall grasses, one using a walking stick, while ahead a third boy walks with three dogs, also carrying a stick. Birds lift into the air in the distance, their movement adding to the sense of an active summer day. At the hill’s crest stands a tall water tower with wind-driven rotor and tank — a utilitarian structure serving as a water source for livestock, with a grazing horse nearby. The work includes Armstrong’s tiny ladybug, a distinctive and collectible signature feature the artist occasionally incorporated. Painted circa 1968, Wind Mill reflects the style Armstrong was developing in the late 1960s and early 1970s, particularly his celebrated “Fields of Grass” compositions. With its layered perspective, warm palette, and fine attention to light, the piece is an evocative example from this early period. Trained by his mother, herself an artist and writer, Armstrong’s talent emerged early — earning his first award at age twelve and setting the stage for a lifelong dedication to painting. He is best known for his acclaimed Fields of Grass series, expansive landscapes often accented with small, narrative details that invite deeper viewing. Many of these include a tiny painted ladybug — a whimsical and collectible signature element found in select works, sometimes referred to as his “Ladybug Series.” Paintings from the 1960s through early 1980s, including Wind Mill, are especially prized by collectors for their connection to this defining era of his artistic style. During the 1970s, Armstrong became one of the top five print sales artists in the United States, with his works reproduced by Heritage Publications, Windsor Art Co., Turner Art Co., and others, and sold in over 3,500 department stores nationwide. He has been honored with retrospective shows at Les Cuisins Gallery and Stanford University, and his paintings remain in private and public collections worldwide. Armstrong’s art resonates with collectors of American Realism, California Impressionism, and 20th-century plein air landscapes, sharing affinities with artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Maynard Dixon, and Clyde Aspevig. Known for his reclusive nature, Armstrong prefers to let his paintings speak for themselves — a philosophy that has helped his work maintain a timeless appeal across generations of collectors.
