He studied at the University of Iowa and under legendary artist Grant Wood. Influenced by Mexican social-realist muralists such as Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros, Britton contributed murals to public buildings through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), including the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. Later in life, Britton moved to the Colorado mountains due to health reasons, where he produced many of his iconic paintings and sculptures.
