About the Item
An atmospheric sunset after the rain. The light reflected on the still-wet street is creating the most beautifully shimmering light. Two village women carrying baskets are chatting, and a carriage is passing by. If you know and love the work of Eugène Galien-Laloue (1853-1941), you will immediately recognise his scintillating style and subject matter. Laloue loved the region around Barbizon - in fact, he had a house in nearby Fontainbleau - and I have records of another painting that depicts the very same street!.
As you will all know, Galien Laloue signed his works with almost a dozen different names (such as Dupuy, Galliany, Lieven and Lenoir) due to exclusivity contacts with rivalling galleries. Our painting is signed Lenoir, one of his referenced signatures, but whereas usually his Lenoir paintings bear the initial "M", ours bears the initial "A". I think he was probably just distracted (who wouldn't be, when signing at least 11 different signatures) and it is only because of the unusual initial that I am offering the work as attributed only. I am personally certain it is a work by the artist: and I am well placed to know, having been friends with the Galien Laloue family for several decades. Signed at the lower right, our oil on panel measures 22 x 27 cm. The overall size in a Barbizon frame is 35 x 40 cm.
