Description:
In this evocative seascape by French artist Fanch Lel, two fishing boats with bold red sails glide past a breakwater under a soft blue sky, catching the light and casting vivid reflections into the harbor below. Painted in a highly textured, impasto style, this work captures both movement and mood, placing the viewer directly into the calm rhythm of a French coastal port.
To the left of the scene, a solitary white lighthouse or signal tower rises on a sandy stone jetty, anchoring the horizon line and balancing the composition. The sky is a wash of pale greys and whites with peach undertones, suggesting either morning mist or the haze of late afternoon. The boats themselves are defined with thick strokes and rich tones—burnt sienna, rose, and hints of ochre—standing out against the pale sea.
Lel's painterly approach favors emotional atmosphere over fine detail, reminiscent of the École de Pont-Aven and other Breton coastal painters. The soft palette combined with energetic brushwork makes this painting especially appealing for collectors of French marine art or anyone drawn to nautical themes with a romantic impressionist sensibility.
This is a versatile and captivating work, ideal for coastal homes or interiors seeking light, movement, and a touch of seafaring heritage.

Fanch Lel
Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art. A member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques, Fanch Lel's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across France, including in Paris, Avranches, Dinard, and Pont-Aven, to name a few. His art has been highly sought after by collectors for decades.

Considered one of the best coastal painters of the 20th century, Gyrth Russell was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1892. At the age of fourteen, Russell began his artistic career at Halifax School of Art, and quickly graduated to the School of Art at Boston, Massachusetts. His first job was as a draughtsman in the Public Works Department of Canada, in Halifax. It was during this period he saw and sketched the cable ship Mackay Bennett returning to her Halifax Station, her decks piled high with coffins containing bodies found after the Titanic Disaster. In 1911 Russell left Canada to study at the Academie Julian and Academie Calorossi in Paris. In 1914 at the outbreak of War, he left France for London where he was commissioned, under the command of Lord Beaverbrook, as an official War Artist for the Canadian Sector, and spent most of 1918 in Northern France painting the landscapes and coasts travelled by the Canadian military during the conflict. During the course of the First World War he worked with amongst others, Augustus John, William Orpen & Frank Brangwyn, who greatly influenced him.
Russell enjoyed considerable success between the Wars, exhibiting extensively at the major galleries, and was elected to membership of the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters n Watercolours, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists as well as being an active member of the Langham...
