About the Item

Frederick E. Cohen (American, born England, c. 1818-1858) Boy in a Dog Sled, 1853 Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 inches Framed: 35 x 40 inches (approx.) Signed and inscribed: (on side of sled) "[...]F. E. COHEN/MAKER/Detroit/1853/[...]"; Inscribed near center: "H. R. ANDREW'S/RAIL ROAD HOTEL" Inscribed at right of center: "PORK/SHOP/J. HULL" The scene behind the boy depicts the H.R. Andrews Railroad hotel, a well-known hotel in Detroit, on 800 Woodward Avenue. The hotel, which dates from 1838, was a hub for stagecoach travel as well as railroad, and provided a bird’s-eye view to events such as the departure of Michigan troops for the Civil War. In 1869 the Detroit Opera House was built on the site, and the area is now Campus Martius Park in the heart of downtown Detroit. Frederick E. Cohen was born in England around 1818 and immigrated to Canada, crossing into Detroit in 1837. He remained in the Mount Vernon area of Detroit until 1853, painting fanciful panels for Great Lakes passenger vessels, portraits and landscapes. His works are in the collections of The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, Detroit Institute of Arts, and The Detroit Historical Society.

Nineteenth Century Winter Landscape in Pennsylvania by Thomas Birch
By Thomas Birch
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Thomas Birch (American, born England, 1779-1851) Winter Landscape, Pennsylvania Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches FRAMED: 27 x 33 inches (approx.) Thomas Birch was born in Warwickshire, England, son of the enamel and miniature painter William Russell Birch (1755-1834). He and his father settled in Philadelphia in 1794 and produced popular sets of engravings that documented the city's growth such as The City of Philadelphia (1800) and Country Seats (1808). Thomas Birch began to paint portraits around 1806, and soon gravitated to the subjects that made him famous, landscapes, winter scenes, and marine scenes. Birch also painted numerous winter scenes throughout his career, perhaps influenced by the popularity of sleighing and skating in Philadelphia. His landscapes represented the more rustic tradition of English painting and although the subject matter was either the Pennsylvania of New Jersey countryside, Birch’s imagination was oriented toward seventeenth century Dutch painting as he was influenced by artists Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. Birch frequently exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Artists’ Fund Society, formed in 1835. His art was influential in the later development of the Hudson River School of painting and the style of romantic realism...

Dutch Winter landscape with children playing on the ice by Per Wickenberg, 1839
Located in Stockholm, SE
Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century. He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years. After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837. In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske". Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details. Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold. In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality. This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting. Artist: Per (Pehr) Wickenberg (1812-1846) Swedish Title: Dutch Winter landscape with children...
