About the Item
A French Impressionist Fauvist Color-Field pastel on fine quality 'Canson' paper landscape by G Ricard. The painting is signed bottom right.
A charming and characteristic south of France view of a colourful mountain range with a hilltop village, bastide and farm buildings with their red terracotta roofs. The artist has used an interesting and vibrant colour palette of mauve, yellows, greens, red and browns for the composition which makes the painting sing. The technique and use of colour harks back to the landscapes of Van Gogh.
The Alpilles massif is a low-lying mountain range, with a landscape of white limestone rocks, located in the northwest of the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône. The Opies are the highest point at 496 meters above sea level. The massif extends from west to east between Tarascon and Orgon over an area of 50,000 hectares. It is shared by sixteen municipalities, although mainly Tarascon and Saint-Martin-de-Crau. It has been an inspiration for many artists including Cezanne.
