About the Item
Framed size: 16" x 20"
Gabriel Spat’s painting captures a breezy afternoon at the seaside, rendered with a gentle, almost dreamlike touch. The composition is dominated by the rolling, green-tinged waves of the sea, broken with flashes of white foam. Figures in bathing costumes, loosely defined with soft, impressionistic strokes, wade into the shallow surf. Their movements are suggested rather than detailed - small shifts of posture, splashes of water, and the rhythm of the tide convey the feeling of people immersed in leisure.
Far out on the horizon, a sailing vessel drifts under pale skies, its brown sails contrasting softly with the cool tones of water and air. The sky itself is painted with delicate, muted blues and greys, allowing the light to blend seamlessly into the sea. Spat uses loose, fluid brushwork to evoke the constant movement of water and the fleeting nature of an afternoon at the shore. The palette is dominated by sea greens, muted blues, and earthy browns, with dabs of white to catch the sparkle of sunlight on waves. Figures are kept deliberately indistinct, their outlines softened so they merge naturally into their surroundings, enhancing the atmospheric unity of the work.
This treatment reflects Spat’s mastery of suggestion over detail - drawing the viewer into the sensation of being there, rather than simply recording what is seen.
Après Midi sur la Plage is a quintessential example of Spat’s ability to combine atmosphere, movement, and subtle narrative. The absence of sharp outlines or facial detail allows the scene to feel timeless, more an evocation of the idea of a summer afternoon than a literal depiction. This approach aligns with the broader early 20th-century interest in mood painting, where the emphasis shifted from exact realism to sensory experience.

Gabriel Spat
Gabriel Spat was born in Kishinev, Russia, in 1890. Leaving Russia in 1911, he studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and at the Academie Colarossi and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. After World War I, he lived in Paris where he attended the studios of La Ruche, Soutine and Modigliani. Spat spent most of his career in France painting small oil and watercolor figural works and scenes of leisure life at such locales as racetracks, parks, and beaches. He immigrated to the United States in 1945, where he took up residence in New York City. The following year, the Carroll Carstairs Gallery in New York held an exhibition of Spat's watercolors of Paris. Several other gallery shows followed in both the United States and Paris.
