Artist Bio:
Biography from Edward and Deborah Pollack Fine Art, Palm Beach, Florida
The son of George A. and Emma Wright, George Wright was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 13, 1850. A member of the Philadelphia Society of Artists, the Art Club of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Sketch Club, he served as secretary of the latter from 1877 until 1885. He also taught other artists in the city. Wright exhibited his fine art frequently at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, and other venues. He kept a Philadelphia studio at 1334 Chestnut Street from 1879-80 and in the Baker Building at 1520 Chestnut Street from 1880 through at least 1906.
By 1910 Wright was living with his sister and brother in law in Ocean City, New Jersey, where the artist had spent several summers. He died at the age of sixty-six on April 7, 1916, and is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.
Wright earned fame for his finely-detailed domestic interior and shipboard genre paintings. Philadelphia critics stated that he painted original, well-executed subjects and was “well-known among Philadelphia’s lovers of art as a painter of popular subjects that have a strong human interest.” Another reviewer wrote about Wright, “In painting interiors this artist carefully brings together the accessories proper to his subject, creates the scene he wishes to represent, poses his figure or group, and then faithfully copies what he sees. It is this painstaking method that gives his pictures the sense of reality and truthfulness that constitute their main attraction.”

Hudson River School Large American Impressionist Landscape Wisconsin in the Snow
Located in Cotignac, FR
A large scale American Hudson River School Impressionist landscape of a snow scene, most probably Wisconsin, by Leroy Ferdinand Jonas. The painting is signed and dated bottom right and presented in a fine gilt frame.
An imposing view of a snowy landscape most probably the artist's native Wisconsin. Jonas has captured the grandeur of the scene with the contrast between the thick lush snow and the rich colours of the foliage and leaves on the trees. His impasto technique is very characteristic of the American Impressionists as is the subject and sense of scale. A really beautiful painting which because of its scale would be a statement piece in any room.
LeRoy Jonas was born in the town of Texas, Marathon County, Wisconsin, on April 18, 1897, son of Johann F. and Marie (Borchardt) Jonas. He was educated in Wausau public schools and attended the Chicago Art Institute, where he studied under John Norton, noted for his murals, Leopold Seifert, noted for his portraits, and William Wilmovsky, a landscape artist. He worked as a commercial artist and Conservator of Fine Arts there. Upon graduating, he painted for a while in Door County, Wisconsin and was then awarded a scholarship to study under Leon Lundmark...

The Cove at Dusk
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
Signed and dated 1877.
Mortimer Smith, a lesser-known yet skilled artist of the Hudson River School, captured the untamed beauty of the American landscape with remarkable depth. This painting presents a seacoast scene with a solitary fisherman, with his boat during the tide. The rugged cliffs frame the composition, their weathered surfaces telling the story of time and nature’s relentless forces. Sunlight filters through the mist, casting a halo glow in the sky, while waves crash against the shore in rhythmic motion. Smith’s brushwork conveys both the serenity and power of the natural world, inviting the viewer to step into the scene under nature's power and beauty.
Although born in Jamestown, New York, Mortimer Smith would become well-known as a Detroit architect and artist by the end of the nineteenth century. Little is known of Smith's earlier years; however, scholars speculate that he studied in Oberlin and Sandusky, Ohio before moving to Detroit in 1855. There, the artist flourished and became famous for his crisp landscapes of local scenery, including his beloved winter scenes. In addition to his artistic career, Smith founded a successful architectural firm by the name of Smith, Hynchman and Grylls; Smith's reputation in the visual arts was often overshadowed by his draftsmanship as an architect. Nevertheless, he was a vital force in Detroit's arts community exhibiting his works in venues including the Detroit Art...
