About the Item

Georges-Noël Béraud (1912-1972) Pseudonym : Marc Aldine Oil on canvas signed low right with pseudonym Marc Aldine View of Venice Golden frame Size canvas : 55 X 81 cm - Size frame : 75 X 102 cm Certificate of authenticity by Expert Mr Ludovic Saulnier Georges-Noël Béraud (1912-1972) Pseudonym : Marc Aldine We cannot dissociate the career of Georges-Noel Beraud from that of his father Eloi-Noel Beraud (1875-1957) who was also his Master. Éloi-Noël Béraud, born on December 26, 1875 in Saint-Étienne and died on February 9, 1957 in Écouen, is a French painter who has signed his works by many names including Antoine Bouvard and Marc-Aldine. From 1900, his style was affirmed, he painted beautiful paintings with barbizonian accents and many typical scenes of the Art Nouveau that he signed N. Béraud or sometimes Pelletier. At that time, he frequently used watercolour and gouache. After the war, he returned to Paris and made models and advertising posters for the Galeries Lafayette. 1930 is a capital year, which will mark forever the pictorial destiny of the painter... In April, he goes to discover Venice. The effect is instantaneous, the beauty of the site subjugates him, he is conquered and decides to dedicate himself henceforth to paint only Venice. In May, he met Rubens Santoro (1859-1942). At this time, the Italian is at the peak of his glory; he will make discover to Éloi the particular light of the City of the Doges, the glimmering and so impressionistic reflections of the water flowing between the canals, all variations of brown, of ochre, white or brown that form the tones of the facades of Venetian houses. On his return from Venice, Éloi goes through Nice to present his paintings to Morscio, a gallery owner of Italian origin. The latter, enthusiastic, immediately signs a contract. Morscio had the idea of a more commercial and Italian-sounding pseudonym, Marc Aldine. This signature will become one of the two nicknames that he will put on all his paintings until the end of his career. His second nickname appeared in the late 1930s, at the request of the English gallery Whitgift Galleries who, to distinguish his orders from those of Morscio, decided that he would sign Bouvard, a very French name that pleases the British market. In 1932, Éloi begins to train his son Georges-Noel (1912-1972). He gives him advice and reveals his tricks and techniques. They work together, with the master’s mind that Georges succeeds him. To stand out from his father, Georges will sign his paintings Marc Aldine using a process only visible under the illumination of a black light lamp (called wood lamp).
