GILBERT Pierre-Julien (1783-1860) Marines - Boats are Leaving for Fishing in Brittany Two Oils on wood panels in pair signed both low right Old frames re-gilded with leaves Dim wood panel : 18 X 36 cm (each) Dim frame : 28 X 47 cm (each) Pierre-Julien Gilbert (1783 in Brest – 1860 in Brest) was a French painter who specialised in naval scenes. Gilbert was a pupil of Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin. He taught painting at the École Navale from 1816, and was admitted to accompany the Navy during the Invasion of Algiers in 1830. Gilbert was professor of drawing at the Naval School of Brest. This artist recalled on canvas one a large number of episodes of the French maritime records, and most of his paintings appeared in the exhibitions, in particular those of 1824 and 1833, which were worth each one to him a gold medal. He exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris from 1822 to 1859. He was made chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1833.
