Lovely Granville Redmond Landscape: Eucalyptus Grove with Mountains in the Distance Granville Seymour Redmond Philadelphia 1871 – 1935 Los Angeles Oil on canvas laid down on board, 18” x 12” Gilded wood frame Framed dimension is 24" x 18" Known primarily for his colorful, impressionistic, and highly collected paintings of poppy fields, Granville Redmond personally preferred his more painterly, Tonalist landscapes. Though the poppy paintings made his reputation as a major California Impressionist, he continued to paint the quieter Tonalist views throughout his life. These landscapes, such as this lovely Eucalyptus grove with mountains in the distance, are often described as depicting “solitude”. In his work, solitude is remarkably lovely. Redmond became deaf and dumb at age 2-1/2 due to scarlet fever. He attended the California School of Design from 1890-93, and was given a scholarship to study in Paris, where he remained until 1898. His painting “Matin d’hiver” was accepted at the Paris Salon in 1895. Returning to California, Redmond lived in both Southern and Northern California, painting landscapes, primarily coastal, up and down the state. During the late teens, Redmond became an actor and friend of Charlie Chaplin, whom he taught the art of pantomine (see photo). Redmond appeared in 7 Chaplin films, and maintained a studio on Chaplin’s studio lot. This picture, probably from around 1910, depicts a sunset in a coastal mountain range. Composed of a range of oranges, pinks, greens and purples, its subtle gradations of color have a touch of Impressionism as well as of Whistler, whom he met in Paris while living with his former teacher, fellow California artist Douglas Tilden (also deaf). In good condition with only one area of minor dabbed inpainting, approximately 1" long by 1/2" wide, on the upper right in the trees, 6" from the top of the canvas.
