Gustav Hessing wurde am 20. Januar 1909 in Czernowitz (damals Österreich-Ungarn, heute Ukraine) geboren und starb am 8. Januar 1981 in Wien. Er zählt zu den bedeutenden österreichischen Malern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach seinem Umzug nach Wien im Jahr 1926 studierte er an der Akademie der bildenden Künste bei Ferdinand Andri und Karl Fahringer. Hessings künstlerische Entwicklung war vielfältig: Seine frühen Arbeiten zeigen Einflüsse des österreichischen Expressionismus. Später wandte er sich dem Surrealismus und dem Kubismus zu und entwickelte schließlich einen abstrakten, oft geometrisch geprägten Stil. Ein wichtiger Teil seines Werks widmet sich der Landschaftsmalerei. In diesen Bildern fängt Hessing nicht nur die äußere Form der Natur ein, sondern auch ihre emotionale Tiefe und Symbolkraft. Besonders seine Aquarelle, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs entstanden, zeichnen sich durch eine melancholische, fast traumartige Stimmung aus – beeinflusst durch persönliche Verluste und die Schrecken der Zeit. Nach dem Krieg engagierte sich Hessing stark in der Wiener Kunstszene, war Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe „Der Kreis“ und ab 1957 Professor an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. Seine Werke sind heute in wichtigen österreichischen Museen vertreten, darunter im Belvedere und im Leopold Museum.
