About the Item
Listed German landscape and marine painter Carl Johannes "Hans" Schleich was born in Stettin in 1834. Schleich studied at the Berlin Academy of Art under Hermann Eschke and with Norwegian romanticist painter Hans Fredrik Gude. Best known for his coastal scenes, On the Beach beautifully depicts a patchwork of sea-drift beach treasures under a sky illuminated by the sun.

Charles Francis De Klyn was born in Westchester County, New York, in 1865. A landscape, marine, portrait and figure painter, De Klyn studied in New York and Paris from 1886 to 1891, then taught at the Cleveland Art Club and the Cleveland School of Art. In 1893, he was one of the founders of the Cleveland Brush and Palette Club, and he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1894 and 1895. George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Gay also painted snowscapes, but these are scarcer. It is unusual to find an oil painting by this artist, as he worked mainly in watercolor. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago.
