ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The inspiration for my paintings comes from images of landscapes; the urban landscape and the narrative of my "inner landscape." Within these worlds, I express my vision of the intertwined tensions between beauty, spirituality, and turmoil which are reflective of the inherent struggle of life. I express the life energy of the landscape using gestural brushwork. The gestural freedom is juxtaposed against areas of intricate, detailed passages. An atmospheric light quality created with bold color and high contrast gives the paintings a glow. All of these elements combine to create a charged sensual image.

A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark.
Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street.
This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40".
Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. I have always been a bit obsessed with horizons and how a horizontal line on a painting becomes 'landscape' in the viewers mind. I love the idea of suggesting a landscape, but then abstracting the subject and using the materials in such a way that the texture and details made by the paint, and the grain of the wood panel, are as important if not more so than the subject itself." Rebecca enjoys balancing on the fine line between abstraction and representation, to imply a landscape with paint rather than accurately visually recording it. Her landscapes are somehow subliminal. Somehow ‘other’. Somewhere not quite real. An idea or a memory of a landscape. She aims to create an emotionally charged atmosphere with colour and texture and line, working with paint for paint’s sake.
