About the Item

Original Hudson River School Catskill Mountain Autumn Painting of Trout Fly Fisherman at Woodland Stream by Jasper Francis Cropsey A leading painter of the Hudson River School, Jasper Francis Cropsey (American, 1823-1900) was renowned for his luminous depictions of the American landscape. Here, a quiet stream (possibly Kaaterskill Creek) in the Catskill Mountains winds through a forest alive with autumn color of the maple and Hemlock canopy. Sunlight glances off moss-covered rocks and the rippling water in the brook. A lone figure casting a fishing rod at the water’s edge reminds us of the intimate relationship between people and the natural world. The muted greens, russets, and ochres enrich the palette, emphasizing the quiet beauty of the fall landscape. Cropsey’s careful attention to light, texture, and seasonal change reflects both his architectural training and his reverence for nature. The careful rendering of foliage, rocks, and running water still shows his technical precision, but the looser handling in the canopy and background speak to a later composition. The vertical composition, with a small figure integrated into a richly wooded landscape, resembles works he made in the 1870s–1880s, when he often painted intimate forest interiors and stream views, not just sweeping Hudson River panoramas. This painting embodies the romantic spirit of mid-19th century American landscape painting, celebrating the beauty and grandeur found in everyday wilderness scenes. Artist: Jasper Francis Cropsey Medium: Oil paint on linen Signature: Lower left corner "J.F. Cropsey" Condition: Good, see images. Presented in period appropriate frame Canvas size: 16"H x 9 5/8"W Frame size: 19.5"H x 13"W x 2"D Born on Staten Island, New York, Jasper Cropsey was a nationally known luminist landscape painter whose work reflects his interest in architecture and allegorical progression, seasons, etc. Called "America's painter of autumn", he was especially known for his sunlit-ridden fall landscapes. Reportedly the peak of his career was the creation of a "nine-foot-long canvas of a New York autumn. Its brilliant colors stunned many of the English viewers to whom it was presented in London." (Zellman 202) His painting, Autumn on the Hudson River, was so well received in England that Queen Victoria granted him an audience. Cropsey had early success, being acclaimed by the press when he was in his twenties. He was trained in architecture, having been apprenticed to an architect when he was age 15, but he turned to landscape painting, which was then gaining acceptance. He was an admirer of landscape painter Thomas Cole and used Cole's Roman studio when studying in Italy from 1847-49. Although Cole was deceased by then, Cropsey adopted Cole's colorful palette and romantic treatment of subject matter. He lived most of his life at Hastings-on-Hudson, overlooking the Hudson River and traveled and painted extensively in the river valley. However, from 1856 to 1863, he lived in England where the influence of Frederic E. Church replaced Cole.
