About the Item

John Gilbey Bowles (British, 1929 – 2011) The challenge – fox and hunter Oil on canvas Signed ‘J Bowles’ (lower left) 38 x 38 in. (96.5 x 96.5 cm.) John Gilbey Bowles, a distinguished British artist, was born on April 13, 1929, in the picturesque village of Tansley, Derbyshire. His passion for art ignited at a young age, picking up a paintbrush for the first time at just ten years old. Reflecting on his artistic journey, Bowles once remarked, "I never had any doubt I wanted to be an artist." This unwavering dedication would shape his life and career in profound ways. Bowles honed his artistic skills at the Gravesend School of Art from 1943 to 1948 before advancing to the prestigious Royal College of Art, where he studied from 1950 to 1953. During his time in education, his talent and commitment did not go unnoticed. He was awarded the British Institute Scholarship in Engraving, a remarkable achievement that solidified his place among the promising artists of his generation. Additionally, he was elected as an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, a testament to his growing reputation in the art world. Respected among his peers, Bowles formed close friendships with some of the most influential figures in the art world, including Henry Moore, Dick Fozzard, and the legendary L.S. Lowry. He spoke highly of Lowry, acknowledging his deep gratitude for the artist’s long-standing friendship and encouragement. These relationships not only enriched Bowles’ artistic perspective but also provided him with support and inspiration throughout his career. Bowles' work was widely celebrated and showcased in numerous exhibitions. He held solo shows at renowned venues such as Parsons Gallery in London, Geoffrey Museum in London, Monks Hall Museum in Salford, and Birkenhead Museum. Beyond his solo exhibitions, he also displayed his works at esteemed institutions, including the Royal Academy of Art, the Royal British Academy, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, among many others. His striking artwork found its way into prominent collections, with pieces being acquired by The Victoria and Albert Museum, Education Trusts, and Ethena Reproductions. Additionally, private collectors across England, Jamaica, and the United States sought his work, further cementing his international appeal.
