About the Item

Title: Almshouses and Stone Gateway Chipping Norton Oxfordshire Architectural Scene by John Steane (b.1931) Size: 19.75 inches (height) x 23.25 inches (width), including mounting watercolor painting on paper, mounted but unframed condition: Good, some faint handling marks and light edge wear Provenance: from a large private collection of this artists work, Oxford, England Description: This striking watercolour by John Steane depicts the historic Almshouses in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, captured in rich architectural detail and framed by dramatic skies and lush greenery. The view is centred on the grand carved stone gateway leading to the almshouse courtyard, while a row of steeply gabled roofs and tall chimneys lines the right-hand side of the composition. These Grade II-listed almshouses, often referred to as the Bliss Mill Almshouses, were originally founded in the 17th century and are an iconic feature of the town’s architectural heritage. Built in traditional Cotswold stone, the buildings are not only aesthetically striking but reflect the long history of philanthropy in rural market towns like Chipping Norton. Steane’s treatment of the subject emphasises both the structure’s elegance and the richness of its surroundings—the deep green of the trees and the strong cast shadows lend a cinematic quality to the scene. Ideal for collectors of British architectural watercolours, Cotswold landscapes, or anyone with a connection to Chipping Norton or the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside, this painting brings together historical interest, expressive execution, and regional charm.
