Description:
This vivid and beautifully detailed harbour scene by British artist John Steane (b.1931) captures the Italian port town of Muggia in June 1950. At the centre of the painting is the Amazzone—a steamship registered in Trieste—moored along the stone dock. Dark smoke billows from its funnel as smaller wooden boats bob in the foreground, adding dynamic contrast and a lively sense of activity to the scene.
Located just south of Trieste on the Adriatic coast, Muggia is known for its fishing heritage, Venetian-Gothic architecture, and proximity to the Slovenian border. Steane’s composition reflects the postwar Mediterranean port in transition, blending maritime industry with serene water reflections and mountainous coastal backdrop. The fine draughtsmanship and vibrant palette bring energy and warmth to the image, while the architectural elements and cranes anchor it in historical reality.
