About the Item

Title: University Parks Oxford Pavilion Red Roof Trees and Sculpture Group 2016 by John Steane (b.1931) Size: 9 inches (height) x 12.25 inches (width) watercolor painting on paper, unframed condition: Good, some faint handling marks and light edge wear Provenance: from a large private collection of this artists work, Oxford, England Description: This 2016 signed watercolour by John Steane (b.1931) offers a lively, sunlit view of University Parks in Oxford, with a crisp red-roofed pavilion building framed by tall trees and set against a wide expanse of open green lawn. Titled on the reverse as University Parks Oxford 2016, the painting also features a sculptural group of figures to the left—a rare human element in Steane’s otherwise tranquil landscapes. The sky is painted in a rich blend of ultramarine and indigo with expressive clouds, adding contrast and movement to the steady architectural forms below. The red roofs and white gables of the pavilion contrast beautifully with the cool shadows across the foreground grass, drawing the viewer’s attention to the centre of the scene. The cluster of distant trees creates a natural border, enhancing the sense of enclosure and calm that the Parks are known for. University Parks is a much-loved public green space in the heart of Oxford, popular for walking, sports, and quiet study. Steane’s interpretation of it captures both the structure and soul of the place—ideal for collectors of British landscapes, Oxfordshire views, or modern watercolours with architectural charm.
