About the Item

Irises by Texas artist Julie England is an Ink and Watercolor, Oil on Yupo paper. Irises was inspired by the many occasions in our lives where irises are traded or gifted among family members or neighbors, transplanted from garden-to-garden. Irises are offered, given or exchanged like gift-giving as a language of Kindness. Irises are also the hardiest of bulbs that announce the beginning of Spring with their early blooms, singing the praises of sunlight and longer days. These irises blow in the wind and dance in the Sun’s rays. Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point of a bloom like a botanical illustration, each is recording its environment and time. A meditative connection to the wild land comes with observation and ecological awareness. The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These botanical paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Throughout the long tradition of landscape painting, there exists a connection between the artist and the natural world. A painter can evoke this relationship through the use of color, value and line whether the painting is representational or abstracted. These elements combine and intertwine to create rhythms of perspective and dimension, illuminating this personal vision on canvas. Yupo paper is waterproof, and stands up to the rigors of the elements and demanding environments. Ultra-smooth and bright white, it's a paper alternative that stands out. Bio Julie England is an oil painter working in Dallas, Texas. In 2018 she was honored with the SMU Mary Vernon Painting Prize from the Southern Methodist University Meadows Art faculty. England’s artwork was selected for the New Texas Talent XXVII in 2020 and the Texas National 2018 Art Competition & Exhibition. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Strata Gallery, Santa Fe, NM in 2022 followed by an artist residency at Vermont Studio Center in March, 2023. Julie’s paintings are represented by Jack Meier Gallery located in Houston, TX. Julie’s work combines a unique background in engineering, business leadership and visual arts. England earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. After a career in the semiconductor industry, she earned an Associates of Arts degree in 2015 at Brookhaven College, Farmers Branch, Texas. In 2018 she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made” said Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Julie’s passion for blazing trails in corporate roles is why she combines business with her art practice. Taking a seat at the board table is her way of paying forward to the next generation of professional women. England is a director on two corporate boards and paints between board meetings. A daily practice in an art studio located in the Dallas Design District, she is a devoted oil painter. Going back to university for her art degree in order to launch her 20+-year commitment to painting fed her desire for oil painting. Belief in being a positive force in her community, Julie is a director on the board at ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas serving the State of Texas. England is a former board member with the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Arboretum in Dallas, TX and the board of trustees of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, NM. Julie served for numerous years on the Art For Advocacy curatorial committee; this art event raises funds for Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center.

Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point of a bloom like a botanical illustration, each is recording its environment and time. A meditative connection to the wild land comes with observation and ecological awareness. I paint natural, organic imagery with a focus on mark-making and use of material transparencies. My work includes vegetative and topological forms and gestures using color as a vehicle to convey energy from nature. I create images of imaginary environments inviting viewers to visit. Large American Modernist Watercolor Painting Irises Bernard Chaet Expressionist
By Bernard Chaet
Located in Surfside, FL
Hand signed Irises (purple and yellow flowers) 30 X 37 framed. 20.5 X 26.5 sheet without frame. Bernard Chaet (born 1924, Boston, MA - 2012) was an American artist; Chaet is known for his colorful, dynamic modernist paintings and masterful draftsmanship, his association with the Boston Expressionists, and his 40-year career as a Professor of Painting at Yale University. His works also include watercolors and prints. In 1994, he was named a National Academician by the National Academy of Design. Chaet was instrumental in transforming Yale’s traditional art program into one with a more modernist approach that gained national prominence. Chaet melded landscape and abstraction in a traditional established by Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Edvard Munch, Piet Mondrian, and Ferdinand Hodler. His own tenure began in 1951 at Yale, where he worked closely with Josef Albers to revamp Yale’s art program. Between 1959 and 1962 he was the chair of what was then called the Yale Department of Art of the School of Fine Arts — prior to becoming one of the independent professional schools at Yale in 1973. Chaet taught painting and drawing and mentored generations of emerging talents. Chaet was the author of the 1970 textbook “The Art of Drawing” and “An Artist’s Notebook 1979,” both of which have since been reissued several times. In the latter book, alongside examples of work by his favorite artists, are student drawings by Yale graduates such as Robert Birmelin, Michael Mazur and Eugene Baguskas. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1924, Chaet studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and then earned a B.A. at Tufts University. Known for his expressionist landscapes and still lifes, Chaet’s work has continuously been shown in galleries in his native Boston, in New York City, and around the country. In 2010, a retrospective of his seascapes was featured at the Cape Ann Historical Society in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he had a home and a summer studio in nearby Rockport. His has also exhibited at David Findlay Gallery in New York and at Swarthmore College. Many of Chaet’s students went on to notable art careers, including Janet Fish, Chuck Close, and Richard Serra. His work is represented in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT, and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA. Chaet is the recipient of many awards including: the National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities, Sabbatical Grant in 1967-68, the National Academy of Fine Arts, Benjamin Altman Award in Painting in 1997, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Jimmy Ernst Prize in 2001. Chaet was born and raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, MA. He completed a dual program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—studying painting with Karl Zerbe—and Tufts University, graduating with a B.S. in 1949. Chaet is known for his association as a first generation Boston Expressionist. (along with Hyman Bloom and Jack Levine) Chaet was a contributing editor to Arts Magazine. In 1960 he published the book Artists At Work, which features in depths conversations with artists Pat Adams, Anni Albers, Josef Albers, Al Blaustein, Hyman Bloom, James Brooks, Robert Engman...
