About the Item
Kenny Harris's latest body of work was informed by two recent residencies in Tuscany, at Borgo Finocchieto and Monteverdi. Inspired by the heavy Tuscan light, Harris paints the landscapes and interiors of this art-historically rich region with a fresh eye and attention to detail.
He was particularly inspired by the unique architectural elements and imperfections of the Italian interiors. States the artist, "There's just something about painting a 3-foot- thick stone or plaster wall that has been there for centuries. It's typically irregular lighting conditions that speak to me. Also, irregularities in construction or details that you'd never see in houses in the U.S. are things that catch my eye."

Kenny Harris
Kenny Harris has traveled around the world, painting on location. He is fascinated with subtle light effects and expressive painterly surfaces, focusing on interiors or cityscapes. His dynamic paint application describes the way the light pours through space, with scrapes and impasto embodying the texture of the surfaces depicted. The paint itself becomes plaster and wood or a glint of light reflecting off a dull surface worn smooth with age. The locations chosen for these paintings span the globe from Ireland, Lisbon to Italy, London, Paris, Havana and Istanbul. Harris has been traveling and painting for many years and this body of work reflects the many disparate spaces that capture his eye for light and texture. His wife, fellow painter Judy Nimtz, appears in many of the small paintings, in the act of painting at her easel or in other quiet moments. For his large compositions, Harris chose to focus on Havana, Cuba as his subject. The colorful emptiness of its arcades and interiors evoke a stillness charged with meaning. The Cuban people are waiting in anticipation for what is to come and these empty spaces are emblematic of this suspense. Harris’s paintings are at once both modern and nostalgic. Harris is represented by George Billis Gallery in New York City.

The bold flowers and repeating geometric patterns in this series of paintings are lushly modeled in oil paint, and are coupled with the use of inlaid wood. Surrounding the colorful and whimsical bouquets and garlands is a border of complimentary colors rife with kaleidoscopic floral images to further entice the eye. Influences of Persian miniatures and French Baroque are prevalent, as well as traditional floral painting which was used to document nature’s beauty. The artist states, “By using subject matter that is historically decorative and painterly, I seek to explore the medium’s more ethereal content.” The paintings become visually intense and hallucinatory as different varieties of flowers and leaves dance and intertwine in the geometry of the surrounding patterns.
Traditionally mysticism was effectively communicated in painting through an assortment of lyrical, painterly indulgences, creating a supernatural, as well as an escapist experience. Christopher has been an artist since early childhood, when he would watch Bob Ross on PBS and mimic the famed oil painter’s art with crayons. He considers himself a self-educated artist, with his studies ranging from personal training with contemporary masters, to classical academic art technique, with much inspiration from 19th Century art and the Impressionist Movement. Christopher lived in Italy for a time, immersing himself in Italian culture and art, which continues to influence his painting. His fan base has grown considerably since his return to the US, gaining the attention of Lucasfilm and Marvel Fine Art, which both signed him as an officially licensed artist in 2016.
