Lee Tiller has developed quite a reputation for his ability to capture the effects of light on the landscape. His impressionist style harks back to that of the 19th Century French impressionists, a style that he claims formed the pinnacle of artistic expression. In 'Fields of Gold' there is an obvious resonance to Monet's grainstacks and the toil of farmwork in the landscape. This is rural modernity in a true sense. In Tiller's work, as in the original French Impressionists, we see the full richness of the 'broken colour' technique whereby everyday elements become an orchestration of chromatic hues, tones and tints. The strong convergent lines of this painting invites the viewer towards the marvelous expanse of dawning sky. It has a strong sensation of both time and place, and leaves you feeling a sense of tranquility and emotional calm. You can almost hear the distant dawn chorus!
