About the Item
You look at the street with all the cracks in it and the curb. An image communicates the whole sense of that kind of reality. You can't but it into words. I have several books in my studio that are just pictures of the city of people in the city. And I don't look at the people. The images that I pick out are the ones where you can see remains of the old buildings. There is a whole facade of this building. I keep looking. I look at the brinks. That's what I respond to. I have a book on the south side from the forties and it has all the cobblestone streets and the old facades and the telephone poles with the wires going down there. And the streetcars. Remember streetcars? The red streetcars with the tracks in the street. Roosevelt Road had tracks. When I was a kid, my grandfolks lived on Lawrence and we lived on the West Side. We'd take the Crawford train, I'd stay up in the front next to the motorman looking out the window and I'd see the way the tracks went and all the buildings going by on both sides. - Leopold Segedin.
