Linda Clerget
Impressionist outdoor abstract painting "Reflections around the marsh"

2023

About the Item

This series of paintings is inspired by the relationship between the artist and the Fontainebleau forest region. Here we're talking about the Episy marsh, a sensitive, protected natural area. Every day, the artist goes out to make sketches, to walk, to dialogue with the forest and nature. The initial sketches are made on the spot in different mediums (watercolour, pencil, gouache, ink, pastels). These are notes that will then be used to create from these traces and the memory of the moment lived with the place. The final painting is therefore done in the studio. The watercolor painting is done on a watercolor paper (Arches). It comes with its certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Review by Jordan Baker, artist and curator : In a series of fast mark-making, bordering on frenetic, Linda Clerget paints a scene in a forest, ”which for the artist is a world of its own where she communicates with trees and spirits,” says Clerget. Instead of giving us the illusion of a realistic forest, this painting seems to barely come together into a recognizable format. In fact, without the few definitive trees on the left, this would be an entirely abstract painting. So what does the artist want the viewer to see, if not the leaves and bushes and branches of the forest? Perhaps everything else: the sparkling feeling of communing with nature, the groundedness of disconnecting from technology, the heightened awareness that comes from being in a space where nothing is made to conform to our comfort. Clerget shares with us a sparkling vitality of nature which is one of her sources of inspiration. Linda Clerget is a French artist known internationally for her abstract and impressionist landscapes. She works on the creation of a personal language based on strong fundamentals from French impressionist painting. Evocative and timeless, the energetic paintings by artist Linda Clerget speak to our most primordial selves — a deep connection that the artist is keen to foster. Deeply spiritual and intimate, the canvases are more than beautiful landscapes and abstract gestures. They are an integral part of the artist’s personal journey and an expression of her search for truth, beauty, and meaning in a world that often feels chaotic and cruel. "In any case, I believe that this is a deep motivation and ambition. I think that art allows us to show another world, a deeper, timeless world which vibrates infinite strings in our minds. Like the shamans, I believe in the idea that our sleep, our intuitions and our creations all reveal strange, fascinating, mysterious things about life and its origins. I don’t have a precise definition, and I don’t look for one. That’s why I like painting: I’m able to reveal this feeling and subtly communicate it to others without them knowing it consciously."
