Louis Cabié, renowned artist in France and particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, traveled in the great southwest throughout his life. Pupil of Harpignies whose passion for vegetation is found in the style of the Barbizon school, he will transcribe until his death the simplicity of the picturesque French landscapes. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, bewitching valleys, or even a landscape in its simplest form that it will know how to raise with a vital contrast.
At the beginning of his career, when the painter was still only an amateur, the moors surrounding Bordeaux to the west served as a playground and for testing. It is most certainly around 1885 according to the invoice and the type of signature that Louis Cabié represents this place which he locates on the back of the panel, in Pessac. The central oak is the main element, in winter as in summer, in this landscape which must today be proud of a few strips of bitumen and industrial buildings... This is a testimony to the rurality of the Gironde moors where the winter colors of this landscape of oaks and gorse hints at the cold life of these places in the 19th century.

Charles Francis De Klyn was born in Westchester County, New York, in 1865. A landscape, marine, portrait and figure painter, De Klyn studied in New York and Paris from 1886 to 1891, then taught at the Cleveland Art Club and the Cleveland School of Art. In 1893, he was one of the founders of the Cleveland Brush and Palette Club, and he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1894 and 1895.
