About the Item
Knight was one of the most celebrated of the "Riverbank and Flowers" motif of the early 20th century. he was the son of Daniel Ridgeway Knight noted for similar work but always with a figure in it. Louis preferred to do nature and usually not with a figure included. Framed in a lovely Art Nouveau 24 karat gold leaf hand carved frame. Summer Landscape is an exceptionally fine example of Knight’s early twentieth-century landscapes. Looser in approach than his earlier academic paintings, he applies paint in dabs and flecks, describing a river and field just after a rain. Though the sunlight has pierced the clouds we know it is windy, evident in the ripples in the water, potentially on a cool Spring day. Rich and deep in atmosphere Knight’s focus is downriver and the distant hills. Eschewing the safety and comfort of the dry bank, Knight was determined to attain a real likeness of the delicate ripples in a pool or the current of a stream. It was often his practice, as we feel is the case in Summer Landscape, to stand in the water when painting. One might say Knight learned all he could from the institutions of Paris and then became a dedicated student of nature.

Louis Aston Knight
Louis Aston Knight, commonly known as an expatriate, was in fact born in Paris to American parents, his father the celebrated American painter Daniel Ridgeway Knight. Receiving early and influential instruction from his father he later studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Robert Fleury (1891-1898). Knight’s exhibition debut was at the Annual Paris Salon in 1894, thrust him into an increasingly successful career over which he was awarded numerous honors. He was notably the first American painter to win the Paris Salon gold medals for two consecutive years and his work was included in such distinguished venues as the Paris World’s Fair of 1900 and in 1927 he was made a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. Although he resided in Paris, Knight exhibited very frequently throughout the United States. Despite his indisputable success, Knight never found a niche in the Parisian society and bore a dislike for the traditional ateliers of Paris. He spent a great deal of his time out of Paris in a mill that he rented in Normandy, once the home of the poet Chateaubriand.

Sunyata, A Coastal scene
Located in Greenwich, CT
A coastal scene, Sunyata is painted with a unique intensity.
The painting itself measures 42 x 64 inches so other dimension is framed. In a lovely wood stained frame. Through this intensity, Sarah has found expression for a range of moods that encompass the whole human condition—awe, grief, anger, and joy are all represented here in haunting forms. These are the emotions that inspired the work and they are expressed metaphorically and spiritually, directly and indirectly in her works: her awe at the beauty of the natural world touched by the hand of the divine; her anger at the willful destruction of our planet and its resources; her grief in the form of a wave crashing against rocks; and her joy and exhilaration as sunlight bursts through the branches of a willow tree. Sunyata was directly inspired by lines from Keats’ “When I have Fears:”
Then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink

THE WATERFALL - Oil on canvas cm. 40x50 by Paolo De Robertis, Italy 2011.
To create this beautiful painting, De Robertis drew inspiration from the natural landscapes of the French painter Gustave Colbert, who was also an excellent landscape painter, considering nature as one of his main sources of inspiration.
A stream flows between the rocks free from vegetation in the middle of the undergrowth.
On the right a small waterfall descends from a rocky spur and falls down forming a small basin...
