About the Item

'The Mill', oil on paper mounted on canvas, by Louis Latapie (circa 1930s). A colourful wintery scene, the bare trees are like wireless telephone poles along the stone-fenced road. The steep roofs of the nearby buildings suggest a location in the North of France while their geometric shapes and bold outlines imply a composition leaning towards cubism. This very desirable work by an important European artist is seductive and alluring. Although later in Latapie's career he did fully embrace cubism and abstraction, this is a rare artwork from his earlier transitional phase as he moved further from his expressionist and more figurative works. The piece is in fair overall condition with some slight fading and blemishing. The painting has been stabilised by attaching its original art paper to canvas. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. The work is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. Upon request a video may be provided. Signed 'Latapie' in the lower right hand. About the Artist: Louis Latapie (1891-1972) was a highly celebrated artist who enjoyed an international reputation which continues today. During his long career he exhibited regularly at the major Paris Salons, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. He had numerous individual and group exhibitions including Art et Résistance Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris in 1946. On his death in 1971, he was honoured, like Braque and Picasso, with a major retrospective at the Palais des Papes in Avignon. Further comprehensive retrospectives of his work were held in 1988 at the Musée Rapin and the Musée des Augustins. Appearing in numerous exhibitions and sold in the major auction houses, his works can be found today in the collections of museums worldwide including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, (Paris); Musée d’Art Moderne, (Paris); Musée d’Art Moderne (Geneva); and the city museums of Toulouse, Avignon and Poitiers. 'Winter in Provence', gouache on art paper, by Raymond Debiève (circa 1970s). There is both beauty and melancholy in this delightfully charming artwork. The artist's naive style is at odds with the refinement, poise and sophistication of the painting. Perhaps the artist was making a statement as well with the broken wall...

'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre.
