About the Item
Luther E. Van Gorder gained international acclaim for his depictions of the French countryside, Parisian streets, and New York Sound coasts. He trained with William Merritt Chase at the Chase School of Art and studied under Carolus Duran at Paris’s École des Beaux-Arts. Van Gorder combined the informal compositions of Impressionism with the realism of French academicism and the subtle color harmonies of Tonalism. A frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago, he is celebrated for works such as this painting of Claude Monet’s home and poppy fields in Giverny, France.
