The bustling streets of Cornhill and Threadneedle, filled with London's iconic double-decker buses, converge towards the pinnacle of the renowned building, receding into the bright background. Israëls was known for riding double-decker buses, which allowed him to enjoy the city from an elevated vantage point. The unique point-of-view of The Royal Stock Exchange invites viewers to experience a transient moment as a tourist in the center of the city, above the bustling crowds. Born in Amsterdam in 1865, Isaac Israëls was a prodigious artist who demonstrated innate talent from a young age, much like his esteemed father, Jozef Israëls, a prominent member of the influential Hague School. Often called the "Amsterdam Impressionist," his association with the renowned Tachtigers, a group of Dutch artists and intellectuals, had a profound impact on his artistic vision. Sharing the belief that form must harmonize with content, the Tachtigers nurtured Israëls' development of a highly evocative and emotive style that perfectly complemented his emotionally charged subjects. While Israëls was identified as an Impressionist during his time, his distinctive technique, reminiscent of the master Paul Cézanne, was characterized by bold painterly brushstrokes, rich color palettes and a meticulous spatial arrangement, setting him apart as a masterful artist of his era. Early in his career, Israëls exhibited a keen eye for capturing the vibrancy of Amsterdam's streets and cabarets, skillfully portraying the energy and atmosphere of urban life with remarkable artistry. Antoine Blanchard trained at the École de Beaux-Arts in Rennes for three years. Then from 1932 attended the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris for four years. He painted exclusively Parisian street scenes in which the view is of an idyllic Paris in any season, but always in 1900. Blanchard received his initial artistic training at the Beaux-Arts in Rennes, Brittany. He then moved to Paris in 1932 where he joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He won the Prix de Rome. Like Edouard Cortes (1882–1969) and Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941), Antoine Blanchard essentially painted Paris and the Parisians in bygone days, often from vintage postcards. A robust and charming work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical brushwork, elegantly expressed here in a harmonious palette of turquoise, lavender, peach and other gentle pastel shades. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and most importantly to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a significant stylistic impact on his subsequent work. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into nuances of light.
