La Porte Saint Denis, Paris - Post Impressionist Cityscape Oil by Lucien Genin
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed oil on original canvas figures in landscape circa 1930 by French post impressionist painter Lucien Genin. The work is centred around the Porte Saint-Denis - a triumphal arch located in Paris, France. The street is bustling with city-goers and cars pass by the tall buildings painted in red, yellow and white. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 27"x31" Unframed: 20"x24" Provenance: Private French collection Lucien Génin came from a family of stone-cutters. He first studied at the art school in Rouen, then in 1919 entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He settled in Montmartre early in the 1920s, and in 1936 moved to the Latin Quarter. Although he had received a thorough training, he created his own completely spontaneous technique aiming at approaching his subjects with a fresh look. Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache. Lucien Génin showed work at the Salon d'Automne in 1926 and 1930. His work featured at the Marcel Aymé and the Painters exhibition, Galerie Roussard...

Surrealist Female Nude in Industrial Landscape Oil Painting, 1930s Modern
By Virginia True
Located in Denver, CO
Oil on board. Surrealist/Modernist painting with a female nude reaching into a wood burning stove, hilly landscape with barn, houses, still life with a bowl of fruit, stormy sky and a small male figure. Presented in a custom frame, outer dimensions measure 29 ¼ x 35 x ¾ inches. Image size is 24 ¼ x 30 inches. Provenance: Private Collection, Colorado About the Artist: The daughter of a classically-trained pianist mother and a concert violinist father, she had an intellectually stimulating upbringing enhanced by Christian Science values. After graduation from high school in Hannibal, Missouri, she enrolled in the College of Education at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1919. Soon, however, she gave up the idea of becoming a teacher and entered at the John Herron Art Institute (whose collections are now part of the Indianapolis Museum of Art). The Institute’s early faculty included artists from the Hoosier Group trained at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany, who educated artists in the realist tradition. True’s teacher and mentor, William Forsyth, gave her an excellent foundation in drawing and the technical aspects of painting and composition. When the failure of her father’s business in the early 1920s forced her to start earning a living, the Herron Institute hired her as an instructor for its art school, allowing her to support herself while she finished her studies. Following graduation from the Institute in 1925, she received a one-year scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her former teacher William Forsyth wrote in his recommendation: "I can say without exaggeration that she was one of the best pupils I ever had during the twenty-five years I was a teacher at the John Herron Art School." At the Academy, she studied with Daniel Garber, an impressionist landscape painter associated with the New Hope art colony, and Hugh Breckenridge noted for his bold palette and expressionistic use of color, as well as the abstract work he started doing by 1922. She also studied briefly in the art department at Columbia University, perhaps in1928 when she produced some of her New York street scenes. From Pennsylvania, she returned to Indiana teaching for several years at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. She also began showing her work at several area venues, including the Herron Institute, the Artists of Indiana, and the Hoosier Salon held early on in Chicago. Among the Salon’s exhibitors were Gustave Baumann, Victor Higgins, and Olive Rush, who either were Indiana natives or whose careers included connections with the state. By the 1920s all three of them had become associated with the Santa Fe and Taos art colonies. In the summer of 1928 True experienced both New Mexico communities and Southwest culture firsthand with Francis Hoar and her husband Clement Trucksess, her friends from the Herron Institute. They had relocated to Boulder in 1927 and were teaching at the University of Colorado. She recorded in her journal her initial reaction to the New Mexico landscape: "Might I preserve on canvas my thrill and deep feeling of the grand things of nature I have beheld today….There’s a wideness in God’s country that expresses peace to me." Inspired by her trip, True created a group of watercolors for her solo exhibition in 1928 at the Lieber Gallery in Indianapolis. They marked a transition from the realist style she learned at the Herron Institute to the more modernist, semi-abstract one she soon adopted. In the summer of 1929, she accepted an instructor’s position on the faculty of the Fine Arts Department at the University of Colorado (CU) in Boulder. She after that joined the Art Association of Boulder founded in 1923 by Mrs. Jean Sherwood, an art patron and club woman who relocated from Chicago to teach at the Boulder Chautauqua. Sherwood helped convince Dean Fred B...

Large Modernist Oil Painting 1940s, Judaica Hasidic Shtetl Wagon Driver WPA Era

Genre: Modern Subject: Landscape with figure of horse, driver and wagon Medium: Oil Surface: wood Board EMANUEL ROMANO Rome, Italy, b. 1897, d. 1984 Emanuel Glicen Romano was born in Rome, September 23, 1897. His father Henryk Glicenstein was a sculptor and was living in Rome with his wife Helena (born Hirszenberg) when Emanuel was born. His father obtained Italian citizenship and adopted the name Enrico. Emanuel was brought up in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England and Poland. In 1926 Emanuel Glicenstein Romano and his father sailed for New York. They briefly visited Chicago. Romano's sister, Beatrice, and mother only joined them in New York years later. Romano changed his name on his arrival to America and some have erroneously speculated that this was to avoid antisemitic discrimination. In truth, as the son of a highly-regarded artist, Romano changed his name to ensure that any success or recognition he would later attain, would be the result of nothing other than his own merit as an artist, and not on account of his father's fame. In 1936 Romano was worked for the WPA Federal Art Project creating murals. ( there were many jewish artists active with in the WPA period. notably Chaim Gross, Ben Shahn, Isaac and Moses Soyer, Abraham Rattner and many others. During and immediately after World War II, Romano created a series of allegorical works depicting graphic holocaust images that were held closely by the family until after his passing. One of these works is now on permanent display in the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg Florida. Emanuel's father died in 1942 in a car accident before they could realize their shared dream of visiting Israel. In 1944 Romano, having completed his degree at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago, began teaching at the City College of New York. Romano moved to Safed, Israel in 1953 and established an art museum in his father's memory, the Glicenstein Museum. COLLECTIONS Indianapolis Museum of Art Metropolitan Museum of Art Boston Fine Arts Museum Fogg Museum Musée Nacional de France Recently his work has been added to the Florida Holocaust Museum collection. Harvesting Plums - Scottish 1930's Glasgow School art portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb Scottish Glasgow Girl 1930's portrait oil painting is by noted female artist Jessie M. McGeehan. McGeehan studied at the Glasgow School of art, enrolling at the age of 15 in 1888 and her last recorded attendance was in 1895. While at Glasgow School of Art, Jessie associated with prominent Scottish artists including Margaret Macdonald and Frances MacDonald of the Glasgow Four. She also later studied in Paris. This gorgeous vibrant Scottish School style portrait is just superb. The composition is of a young girl in a blue dress, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows. She has little gold hoops in each ear and a bow in her dark hair. She is gazing at the artist/viewer with dark eyes. She is sat in the foreground with a large wicker basket of purple plums and a couple of heads of garlic clasped on her lap. Above her are branches of a tree, laden with fruit. A line of slender silver tree trunks lead past a bed of orange pumpkins to a whitewashed cottage with a woman standing in the doorway. The sunshine is illuminating the scene and casting strong shadows. The brushwork is bold, the colours vibrant and the dark outlines typical of the Scottish School artists. This is a really charming oil painting by a noted female Scottish artist and one of the best examples of her work. Signed and dated (19)32 upper right. Provenance. Yorkshire estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 21 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a light ornate frame, 28 inches by 25 inches, in good condition. Jessie Mary McGeehan (1872–1950) was a Scottish artist renowned for her painting and mosaic work, often depicting genre scenes, landscapes and figures. McGeehan was born in Airdrie and her father Patrick was a carriage hirer. An artistic family, Patrick exhibited a painting Royal Scottish Academy in 1879 and the artist Aniza McGeehan (1874–1962) was Jessie's younger sister. Both sisters studied at the Glasgow School of Art, Jessie being enrolled at the age of 15 in 1888 and last recorded as attending in 1895. Their younger sister Mary Catherine (1877–1960), later known as Sister Callista, also attended Glasgow School of Art from the age of nine. Jessie McGeehan also studied in Paris after leaving Glasgow School of Art. McGeehan's work included paintings, pastels, stained glass, mosaics and tapestry designs. She was active from 1892 and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1895 with the work Sweet Idleness until 1916. From 1897 McGeehan lived and had a studio at 134 Bath Street, Glasgow, which was shared with Aniza until 1899. By 1936 she had moved to 152A Renfrew Street as advertised in the 'Glasgow Observer'. In 1901 McGeehan exhibited the work The Victorian Era at the Royal Academy in London. McGeehan's 1929 oil portrait of her sister Aniza is in the North Lanarkshire Museums collections. This was one of two oil paintings exhibited in the 1929 Walker Art Gallery Autumn Exhibition. Jessie McGeehan created a glass mosaic panel for St Augustine’s Church in Langloan, Coatbridge. She also created a glass mosaic in fourteen panels depicting the Stations of the Cross for St Aloysius...

Harbor Reflections
By Emily Hoffmeier
Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on artist board, signed Emily Hoffmeier lower left Most likely a scene of Nantucket harbor and presented in what could be the original frame with a slightly highlighted silver finish. Presents well overall measuring 16.5" x 20.5" including the frame. From 1929 to her death in 1952, Emily Hoffmeier (1888-1952) spent summers on Nantucket, painting in the waterfront studios—first Harborview No. 3 and later moving to the Red Anchor Studio on Washington Street. She exhibited in the Easy Street Gallery, the Candle House Studio, and later at the Kenneth Taylor Galleries. After the death of Maud Stumm in 1935, Hoffmeier took over the direction of the annual Sidewalk Art Show, which she ran for the next eighteen years “with untiring cheerfulness and unflagging interest.” She was one of the founding members of the Artists Association of Nantucket and served on its first executive committee. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachuetts, Hoffmeier taught art classes at the college for several years. From 1917 to 1951 she was a teacher at West Chester High School in Pennslyvania, where she headed the mathematics department. In addition to enrolling in the plein air classes of Frank Swift Chase...

Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse)
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This painting is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse), c. 1930s, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches, signed lower right; presented in a newer silver painted frame About the Painting Writing about an exhibition of Charles W. Adams’ work at the Eighth Street Art Gallery in the mid-1930s, Emily Grenauer observed in The World-Telegram that the artist’s paintings were “distinguished for their solid form, well organized design and sumptuous color” and the art critic for The Herald Tribune found Adam’s work “a strong, formal realization of his subject . . . he paints with vital emphasis on structure and composition.” Although we do not know which works these critics referenced, it is likely they were writing about paintings like Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse). With its carefully designed reality, strong angles, solid forms, and well-disciplined puffs of smoke in the background, Adams presents a highly structured version of the Greenwich Village landmark, the Jefferson Market Library, which was a courthouse at the time Adams completed this work. The Jefferson Market Library was a prized subject for downtown painters, including the Ashcan School painter, John Sloan, the modernist, Stuart Davis, and the precisionist, Francis Criss...
