The scenery has an idyllic charm and the serene harmony, the mood is being shaped by the colour palette, light and calm composition. The work shows strong similarities to the paintings by Jan van Goyen (1596 – 1656) and Aert van het Neer (1603 – 1677). JAN MEERHOUD 1633–1677 Dutch School VILLAGE VIEW Panel – Signed – 21 x 25 Label on the reverse Exhibited: “Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century”, Galerie Friederike Pallamar, Vienna, 1988 Literature: “Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century”, Galerie Friederike Pallamar, Vienna, 1988, exhibition catalogue, p. 53, illustrated. With documentation by Dr. Walther Bernt, Munich, 1967 Provenance: – Old collection Jan Bosscha, Amsterdam (c. 1909) – Old collection C.J. Mackenzie, London (before 1918) – Private collection, Germany, 1967 – Private collection, Switzerland, 1988 Biography: Meerhoud Jan (Meerhout) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, probably born around 1630 or 1633 in Gorinchem (Gorkum), The Netherlands. He is known for his luminous 17th-century landscapes, mountain scenes, maritime views, and cityscapes, capturing the quiet poetry of water and sky in the Dutch landscape tradition. Details of Meerhout’s life remain scarce. According to the RKD, his exact date of birth is uncertain, but records confirm that he married in 1650. Throughout his career, he worked in Utrecht, Heusden, Dordrecht, and Gorinchem, and is noted to have worked in Amsterdam between 1630 and 1650, where several families bearing the Meerhout name were registered. Meerhout’s cityscapes and river scenes often echo the atmospheric qualities found in the early work of Jan van Goyen, suggesting his place within this influential tradition of landscape painting. The date and place of his death remain unclear. A Johannes Meerhout living on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam was buried on March 27, 1677, in the Nieuwe Kerk, though it is not definitively proven that this was the painter himself. Some sources ambiguously suggest his death occurred around 1676 or even later, yet 1677 is most commonly accepted. Despite the uncertainties surrounding his biography, Meerhout’s work endures. Today, his paintings can be found in private collections, such as the Semenov Collection in St. Petersburg, as well as in major public collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Dordrechts Museum, Museum Bredius in The Hague, Loevestein Castle, and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. His works are also housed internationally at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, in Dessau (Germany), and in the museums of Bagneres-de-Bigorre and Abbeville (France). The Municipal Museum in Frankfurt also holds an engraving of him, further testifying to his quiet but enduring legacy in Dutch Golden Age painting.

'Landscape with Shepherds and Animals' by Louis - Pierre Verwée ( 1807 – 1877 )
Located in Knokke, BE
Verwée Louis-Pierre Courtrai 1807 – 1877 Brussels Belgian Painter 'Landscape with Shepherds and Animals by the Water' Signature: signed lower right and dated 'L. P. Verwee 1851' Medium: oil on panel Dimensions: image size 43 x 52 cm, frame size 58 x 66 cm Biography: Louis-Pierre Verwee (also spelled Verwée) was born on March 19, 1807, in Kortrijk, Belgium, and died in Brussels in November 1877. He is widely regarded as the leading representative of the Romantic school in Belgian landscape painting, particularly known for his evocative winter scenes and rural landscapes with cattle. Verwee left school at an early age to pursue his passion for art. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kortrijk, where he studied under Jan Baptiste de Jonghe, a prominent landscape and animal painter. He later continued his artistic training with Eugène Verboeckhoven in Ghent, who would not only become his mentor but also a lifelong friend and collaborator. The two artists often worked side by side, and Verboeckhoven occasionally painted the figures and animals in Verwee’s landscapes, to such a degree that their early works are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Verwee followed Verboeckhoven to Brussels and established himself as a successful landscape and animal painter. His preferred subjects were winter and summer scenes, typically populated with figures and animals. His style, particularly in his early work, was closely aligned with that of Verboeckhoven. Over time, he became known for landscapes that reflected the romantic tradition, with compositions echoing the work of Andreas Schelfhout, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Frans Keelhoff, and Johann Bernard Klombeck. His depictions of forests and rivers often employed a dreamy, atmospheric quality that captured the mood and light of nature. In his later career, Verwee sought artistic innovation but found himself increasingly focused on variations of winter landscapes after 1837. These scenes, popularized by Koekkoek and Schelfhout, were characterized by low-hanging snow clouds, icy waterways, and a cool palette of light blue and metallic grey, creating a moody and intimate ambiance. Occasionally, other artists such as Florent Willems...

Villagers in a Landscape - Flemish 17thC art figurative landscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This fantastic Flemish 17th century Old Master oil painting is by Thomas Van Apshoven. It was painted circa 1650 and depicts a village with figures outside a tavern, eating, drinking and dancing. Beyond are more dwellings, villagers and animals, all under a blue summer's sky. The detail, brushwork and vibrant colouring are superb. This is an excellent example of Apshoven's work and a typical subject he loved to paint. Provenance. Leominster estate. Wax stamp verso. Condition. Oil on panel, 22 inches by 17 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed In beautiful gilt frame, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Thomas van Apshoven (1622– 1664) was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes with peasant scenes and genre scenes in interiors. His genre scenes depict village festivals, the interiors of taverns, village scenes or landscapes with peasants engaged in various activities, singeries, guardroom scenes and laboratories of alchemists. Some still lifes have also been attributed to him. His themes and style are close to that of David Teniers the Younger. He was born on 30 November 1622 in Antwerp as the eldest son of Ferdinand van Apshoven the Elder and Leonora Wijns. His father was a painter who had studied with Adam van Noort and had become a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1596. No paintings by his father are known. His younger brother Ferdinand van Apshoven the Younger became also a successful painter. Thomas studied under his father. Some sources state that he became a pupil of the prominent genre painter David Teniers the Younger. It is more likely, however, that he was an imitator of Teniers. He was registered as a 'wijnmeester' [son of a master] in the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in the guild year 1645–1646. He married Barbara Janssens on 22 March 1645. The couple had four children. The godfathers of the children included the painters Victor Wolfvoet...
