About the Item
Contemporary neutral toned acrylic painting that utilizes a unique lace texture to create a jungle landscape by Texas artist Mike Hoggg. The piece is signed, titled, and dated by the artist on the reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available.
Artist Biography: Mike Hoggg is widely regarded as one of Texas's finest wildlife painters. Using classical techniques to realise his contemporary animal studies, Hoggg incorporates motifs such as pattern and sihlouette to imbue his work with an enigmatic timelessness.
Aesop's fables inspired the story-telling nature of his work. The universal love of wildlife and nature makes Hoggg's narrative art relevant to the observer. The paintings explore Jungian truths that are often difficult to articulate, yet resonant to the human experience.
Through a long dedication to his craft, Mike Hoggg has established himself as a leading influence in illustrating children's books with modernist art.
Born in Glasgow in 1968 he spent his childhood in various parts of the UK before emigrating to America in 1990. He trained at St. Cecilia School of Art from 1988-1992 where he first exhibited. In 2021 he moved to Wimberly, Texas where he lives and paints today.

“Welcome Back Home, My Love” Contemporary Gestural Neutral Abstract Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Contemporary neutral toned gestural abstract expressionist painting by Houston based artist Kristi Haines Herman. The work features layers of swirling brushwork in various neutral tones. Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available.
Artist Biography: As an abstract painter, Kristi Haines Herman, uses her artwork to execute ideas and two-dimensional environments that create an emotional experience for the viewer. Her paintings are inspired by personal involvements and reactions to them. Phrases and words ruminate in her mind and slowly turn into abstracted figures that convey her inner thoughts. Haines Herman is highly influenced by movement as her artistic expression due to many years in dance. Movement is depicted through various gestural lines, shapes, and texture which allow the audience to venture through the canvas; thus a visual dance from one edge to another on the painting’s surface.
Ballet was Haines Herman’s first love in the art world, starting at age five. She learned to use body movement as an outward expression which allowed her to explore various audience reactions. This would later correlate with her artwork. In her late teens, dance and visual art would intertwine with time on stage as well as painting for expression. Gradually, visual art became her primary artistic avenue.
Haines Herman attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where she majored in studio art under professors Frank Hobbs and Polly Dixon. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Texas at Austin. During her studies at UT, she was encouraged and challenged by many talented art professors, including Michael Mogavero, John Yancey and David...

Jungle (Jaguar)
By Matt Kinney
Located in Hudson, NY
This new series of painting is an exciting transition for Kinney as he is best known for assemblage and sculpture. “Anim”, the Latin root word of animal, means life, soul or breath. This exhibition features select large-format monochromatic oil paintings on stretched canvas and wood panels. On view as well are works on paper with Japanese Sumi Ink, which inspired the oil paintings. Kinney has been looking at pre-historic cave paintings as well as animals depicted therein, such as the Chauvet caves in Nice, Southern France.
Emerging from the inextricable interplay of light and dark, Kinney’s black and white ink paintings capture the ever-shifting subjectivity shaped by shadow. Cast in Japanese Sumi ink, each unique painting explores the trajectories of human and animal, natural and architectural form- what is revealed or hidden? A variety of hand-torn, heavy weight papers add textural dimension to each mark and brush stroke, as well as through the immediacy of brushstrokes to depict the action within the artwork
In his latest collection of works, Kinney explores animal form and meaning as seen in both contemporary and ancient times. In “Savanna (Zebras) ”, a stampede of zebras is depicted through oil paint on wood panel. Animal populations in regions like the horn of Africa today face the loss of their natural habitats due to extreme draught. He explores the deep imprint they leave behind and the interconnectedness of humans and animals in the world. With the balance of nature at stake, Kinney’s paintings underscore the importance of the relationship between the natural environment and civilization.
