Gorgeous contemporary impressionist oil painting landscape of striking desert bluffs by California artist Mike Wright (American, b.1958), 2014. Dramatic red rocks characterize this desert scene, which contrast vividly with the brilliant blue sky.
Signed and dated "M. Wright '14" lower right.
Presented in a vintage giltwood frame.

A resident of Santa Cruz, California, Mike Wright is a painter of landscapes and architectural subjects in watercolor, acrylic, and oil. He earned a BA from Sacramento State University in 1983 and continued his art education at Cabrillo College.

Mike Wright
Mike Wright was born in 1959 in Northern California. He is a painter of landscapes and architectural subjects in watercolor, acrylic and oil. His landscapes reflect a lifelong love of the outdoors and a deep connection with the desert. Wright is an avid backpacker, hiker and long-distance runner and has taken many trips to the Southwest to paint plein air. His major art influences include Maynard Dixon and Jimmy Swinnerton. Wright's mother was a college art teacher, so he was exposed to good art and learned theory and technique from an early age. He earned a BA from Sacramento State University in 1983. Wright lives in Santa Cruz, California, and travels every year to paint the desert.

William L. Lathrop (1859-1938)
Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony.
Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
