About the Item

Watercolour on paper of a Cornish beach scene by Oliver Bedford. Signed bottom right. Titled and located on a trade label for The Rowley Gallery, Kensington, London. Presented in custom wood frame under glass. A charming Cornish beach scene, people enjoying the low tide and the large expanse of exposed sand and rocks. In his characteristic free and simple style Bedford has created a wonderful feeling of place and atmosphere. We can imagine the holidaymakers enjoying the fresh sea air under a sunny sky. Born in Boston Spa, Yorkshire, Bedford's early years were spent at school in Hanover and Rome. He studied at the Royal institute of Fine Arts in Rome (1919-23), where he was awarded the title of Professor of Architectural Design in 1924. After travelling in Italy and Egypt, he returned to England in 1925 and taught for a year at the Courtauld Institute. During the following six years he exhibited drawings and watercolours in London, became an elected member of the Society of Graphic Artists and the British Watercolour Society, studied Chinese calligraphy and Oriental art at the Courtauld Institute, and studied for his architectural degree with his godfather, Sir Herbert Baker ARA FRIBA. In 1936 he travelled in China, the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, and left Shanghai in August 1937 at the start of the Sino/Japanese war. Moving to Cornwall in 1948, Oliver taught (Truro School of Art), lectured and exhibited his work throughout Cornwall; he lived in Truro. Later he was made a life member of STISA. In 1956 he had a solo show at the Royal Institution of Cornwall, comprising 75 watercolours, 29 oils and 22 etchings. This was considered to be one of the few shows by a living artist ever held by that institution. Many of his works in a variety of mediums were inspired by his travels to China and Europe, as well as Cornwall, and sold at his own gallery and studio in the 1960s and 70s. He exhibited extensively during his lifetime including the Fine Art Society Gallery, London. Perranporth Beach is one of Cornwall’s best known and most popular beaches.

Expressionist Seascape, Bord de la Mer, Cassis, South of France
By Achille-Émile Othon Friesz
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid Century Expressionist oil on canvas seascape of the Mediterranean coastline at Cassis in the South of France. The painting is signed bottom left but as yet undeciphered. Title to the rear stretcher. Presented in a fine gilt and patinated custom wood frame. This stunning seascape captures the raw, untamed beauty of a rocky coastline with impeccable detail. The painting uses a rich palette of blues and earthy browns to depict the tumultuous waves crashing against rugged cliffs. The artist's skilful use of texture and brushwork brings the scene to life, with the churning sea appearing almost animated in its movement. The contrast between the cool, turbulent water and the warm, solid rocks creates a dynamic tension, drawing the viewer's eye along the coast. Unique to this piece is the artist’s ability to convey the mood of nature’s relentless power while also highlighting the serene beauty of the ocean. The careful layering of colours and precise composition make this artwork a captivating interpretation of nature’s untamed forces. Some of the composition and use of colours is reminiscent of the works of Achille-Émile Othon Friesz...
