About the Item

Philip Wilson Steer O.M. 1860-1942, was an English painter, and influential teacher of art. His father was a portrait painter and art teacher and this is where the son was first influenced in the study of art. Phillip Wilson Steer studied at the Gloucester School of Art and at the South Kensington School, he travelled to Paris where he continued his studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole Des Beaux Arts. He became a follower of the impressionist style and was known for his beach scenes and seascapes depicting bright colours and a command of the gradations of light and shade which is visible within this composition. This picture is in Folkstone where he visited when painting various works throughout the area including Dover, the painting shows the corner of Manor Way and the Sandgate Road, the building was a wine merchant , this building is still in place today, however the wine merchant is no longer there. This is a newly discovered painting by Steer and has yet to be exposed to the artistic aficionados within the sphere of knowledge of Philip Wilson Steer. We have included a number of variations of images of the work which include the before and after cleaning, Infra red, and showing how he painted images within the cloud formation, a familiar tactic for the most experienced and knowledgeable artists over the last 500 years.
