About the Item
Régis François Gignoux, a French-born artist trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts under Paul-Hippolyte Delaroche, settled in New York and by 1844 opened a studio in the city, becoming one of the first members of the famed Tenth Street Studio alongside Bierstadt, Church, Cropsey, and Kensett. He painted America’s great sites—Niagara Falls, the Catskills, Mount Washington, and Mammoth Cave—and earned renown for winter landscapes celebrated for their delicate light and atmosphere such as Skaters on a Frozen Pond.
