About the Item

Fine landscape painting from the 1800s with name plate of Samuel Bough, (1822-1878), featuring the artist's skill creating movement with wind in the trees, golden tips catching the sun. The mountains catch the light, and the overall composition is of a sweeping view from the lake and stream up the hill with sheep. Bough was born in England but devoted his life to painting in Scotland, dying in Edinburgh in 1878. This scene of mountains, stream and sheep grazing on a golden hillside with watching figures by the water's edge is idyllic and naturalistic. Unsigned, the painting is not attributed to a specific artist. There is light craquelure and signs of appropriate age in the canvas and the work. While Sam Bough did paint landscapes his forte was in coastal and maritime scenes with figures. The figures appear to be a shepherdess with three children, in a style reminiscent of Bough, Shayer and other 19th century artists. The treatment of light on the central tree and background foliage elevates the golden moment of late afternoon sun. Realistic with expressive color and sense of movement, the artist captures natural light. Sam Bough was a master painter whose work is represented in fine art galleries and art museums, including the Scottish National Gallery. The nameplate includes RSA, Royal Scottish Academy, where Bough was welcomed as a member and regularly exhibited. Bough was a popular painter in his lifetime, and a leading figure in Scottish maritime and landscape art. This landscape is an oil on canvas, in a newer frame with linen inner lining that is in very good condition. The name plate has been attached over the linen of the frame. This painting measures 27.5" by 33" in the frame and sight size of 20" by 26.5". There is some craquelure visible in the sky and one small paint fleck Saltire Gallerie will retouch. The painting is of a good size, in good condition by a highly skilled artist of the time. Ready to hang!

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). The Trossachs, Scotland
By Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...
