About the Item
The Highland Loch
by Sidney Yates Johnson, dated 1899
signed oil on canvas, unframed
Canvas : 12 x 24 inches
Provenance: private collection, UK
Condition: very good condition
Description:
This peaceful oil painting captures the beauty and tranquility of a secluded Scottish loch nestled in the heart of the mountains. A lone figure in a small green boat rows gently across the glass-like water, framed by lush greenery and trees that line the shoreline. The autumn foliage, painted in warm shades of gold and orange, contrasts beautifully with the cool tones of the distant mountain peaks and the soft, cloudy sky.
Sidney Yates Johnson was a prolific painter of landscapes in oil who was working from about 1890 until about 1926. His work has a distinctive style and is similar to that of Frank Hider. The subjects are often in pairs and usually Cornish coastal scenes, beach scenes, highland landscapes and cottages in a rural setting. The artist did not often inscribe the work with the location, but it was usually dated, with the signature S. Y. Johnson scratched in the wet paint. He sometimes signed with a monogram.

F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950)
We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989.
Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured.
Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes...
