Sir Claude Francis Barry (British, 1883-1970) L`isola della felicita, The Island of Happiness 0il on canvas Signed and dated `C Barry 1912’ (lower right) (138.5 x 170 cm.) (Please note that the dark area top left is just a photography glitch) The epithet of the 2011 exhibition at The Royal Museum of Cornwall penned by art critic Simon de Burton in the Financial Times, describes Sir Claude Francis Barry as an enigmatic and largely unknown artist regarded by many as a modern British master. From 1900 Barry studied at Bournemouth Art College and then privately with Sir Alfred East, who was a friend of the family. He studied printmaking under Frank Brangwyn. In 1905 Barry followed East to Newlyn in Cornwall, where a colony of artists had been formed and studied with the artist Stanhope Forbes. Barry later moved to St Ives, where another colony of artists had formed after Newlyn became too industrial, and he became involved in the St Ives Society of Artists, honing the skills which would allow him to experiment successfully in a diverse range of styles including post-impressionism, pointillism, Vorticism, abstraction and minimalism. Barry was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1906, when Alfred East was its President. In a life which spanned some of the greatest events of the 20th century. His personal story is almost as intriguing. Born the son of a Baronet industrialist in 1883, he died in 1970 in relative poverty in Jersey. During the 1930s his wealthy clients included Neville Chamberlain, Queen Mary and Mussolini, and he even managed to emulate the former by embracing pacifism whilst courting fascist despots. Barry went to live on the Continent in the early 1920s, probably in Menton, France and then in Bordighera and Milan in Italy. It may be that this earlier work was left in Milan at this time where it has remained until its recent acquisition. He travelled widely in France, Italy and Germany where he did many etchings with aquatint, mostly architectural in their subject matter. During this period he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. His etching plates were destroyed in Milan by a bomb in 1944. He returned to England during the Second World War and produced several large canvasses of London in the Blitz. In the early 1960s Barry arranged an exhibition in a gallery in Jersey but sold nothing, as the local public were not interested in his work. Towards the end of this eventful life he was almost destitute - In 1968, aged 85 and infirm, he moved to England to live in a nursing home near to his son in Kent. He died in 1970 aged 87. His eclecticism, combined with the fact that many of his works remain in private hands, is one reason why his talent remains relatively unknown outside of art establishment circles. On his method.. ‘First he would sketch out the design with charcoal directly onto the canvas; then he would cover the surface with a thin layer of neutral paint; only then would he begin to apply colour. Colour was the guiding force in Barry’s work: “Colour is the heart and soul, the joy and the glory of painting; without fine colour no picture can be truly great, but with fine colour a multitude of other sins can be forgiven”’ (From Barry’s biography, Moon Behind Clouds by Katie Campbell, 1999).
