About the Item

Provenance Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist Artist Statement "When there is a 90 percent chance of rain moving in, most people want to be warm and cozy at home, but that’s when I’m running down to the beach to meet the weather head on to paint. As the sun began to set, the storm front moved in and was very apparent. The temperature dropped quickly, and as I applied my last quick brush marks across the canvas a cold rain began to fall. Climbing back up the trail from the beach in the rain came the satisfaction of having enjoyed a beautiful moment of nature." -Stephen Mirich Exhibitions "Fleeting Moments: Works en Plein Air" at American Legacy Fine Arts, Pasadena, California, November 17 - December 15, 2017 Dimensions: Unframed 12" x 16"; Framed 18.625" x 22.625" x 1.625

He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945. He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline), but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects. His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique. This in turn imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...
