"The Silk Mills in New Hope" is an Impressionist, Regional landscape by Pennsylvania painter John Pierce Barnes. Classic in its vibrant colors and highly energetic brush strokes, this 25" x 25" oil on canvas is framed in a 22k gold reproduction frame and the painting is estate stamped on the stretcher and canvas on verso.
John Pierce Barnes was born in Philadelphia in 1893. He graduated from high school in the Germantown area of Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Navy during the First World War. After his discharge from the Navy, John began his training at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Design, now the University of the Arts. Barnes then studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1921-1925. He exhibited watercolors and pastels in the Annual Philadelphia Water Color and Miniature Exhibitions of 1921 and 1922. John Pierce Barnes studied with Daniel Garber, and also Henry Hugh Breckenridge and Arthur B. Carles at the PAFA. He was awarded Cresson Travel Scholarships in 1923 and 1924. These awards enabled him to study in France, Belgium and Holland. John Pierce Barnes experimented in several styles, but is best known for his oil paintings of landscapes and portraits rendered in the Impressionist style. Some of his work was painted in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, some in Europe, but mostly in eastern Pennsylvania. Up until the time of his death in 1954, Mr. Barnes was employed by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) Victor Design Division in Camden, New Jersey. Condition: professionally restored, previous reline onto Masonite with edge and corner wear. New UV resisting, non yellowing varnish applied.

Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings.
He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago.
Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory.
Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy. He spent time capturing on canvas Arizona's Canyon De Chelly and Navajo horsemen traversing the region's arid tablelands. He painted California...

Harry E. (Emsley) Wood, Sr., was born 26 September 1879 near Lexington, Illinois, the third child of Emsley Harrison Wood, Jr., and Florence Robinson Wood. The family moved to Indianapolis shortly after Harry was born. Florence Robinson Wood died around 1882 and Emsley Wood married Sallie Bunger Lewis eleven months later. Emsley Harrison Wood worked in various jobs, including real estate sales and as a grocery clerk.
Harry E. Wood attended public schools in Indianapolis until about 1889 when he contracted Scrofulous, a strain of tuberculosis. The condition, coupled with his family's poverty, disrupted his formal education. He attended Manual Training High School in 1899 and worked as a cartoonist for the Indianapolis Star in 1900. Wood illustrated Our Public Servants, a column of political satire written by Kin Hubbard.
