About the Item
No matter where one lives currently, be it London, Austin, or Mumbai, if you have lived near or hiked up Mount Diablo in San Francisco’s East Bay, this could bring back warm memories. Painted in summer, with the golden grasses beneath the California Live Oaks on the lower hills, this mountain continues to grow pressured by tectonic forces.
Perhaps you summited and experienced the views ranging from the Pacific’s Farallon Islands westward beyond the Golden Gate, or the Sierra Nevada Mountains far to the east. It’s been said that the visibility from there covers 8,539 square miles and parts of 40 of California's 58 counties.
And this painting wasn’t created in a studio from a photograph, but rather it was done en plein air—on the scene, portable easel shaky on uneven ground, coming together despite the sun, the wind, the dust—all to capture a fleeting moment in the constantly changing light. It's what gives this work an almost a three-dimensionality as if one is there.
Additionally, artist, Delia Bradford, brought a fresh eye to the scene. She lives surrounded by beauty, maintaining her namesake art gallery and studio in the very scenic village of Carmel where she specializes in Impressionist landscapes and coastal scenes painted outdoors. Bradford acquired her skills in the artisanal way of another era. The daughter of two professional artists, who trained her from a young age, she grew up amid the matchless scenery of Big Sur and began her love affair with painting outdoors. Who wouldn’t?

Eugenia Victoria Weir Martin was a painter and art instructor in Southern California. She was born in Tennessee on March 7, 1906. "Jean", as she was called, was brought to La Jolla, California as a small child by her parents, and remained in that area the rest of her life.
Her Father was a businessman in the early stages of the development of La Jolla. He operated a General Store in the early village. They resided in "Windemere", which is now the home of the La Jolla Historical Society. At the age of 10 she studied art with a Mrs. Fletcher, an artist in residence at the 1916 California Exposition in Balboa Park. She also studied at the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts.
