About the Item

French Romantic school of the 19th Century The artist's inspiration Oil on canvas transferred on wood It is in good condition, but the material has irregularities due to the canvas being transferred onto an uneven wooden support. It has been recently cleaned and restored. 27 x 41.5 cm Framed : 33.5 x 47.5 cm This subject is particularly original in painting yet typical of Romantic art culture. We picture an artist, inspired, painting a landscape at sunset. This brings to mind Claude Lorrain, who could be the subject of the painting. The idea of an artist painting outdoors was novel for artists of the time; previously, they worked in studios. What is remarkable, and extremely romantic, is the artist's attitude: he turns away and covers his eyes to protect them, but above all he appears to be overwhelmed by the emotion and inspiration it provokes. There is nothing realistic here; rather, it is an idealised representation of how an artist should paint. Similarly, in the Romantic imagination, the grandiose spectacle of nature and the emotions it arouses are central themes. The details are charming, such as the painter's face and his palette. There's a real artistic personality here, but it's yet to be identified.
